DEA RAIDS ELEVEN COMPASSION CLUBS IN LOS ANGELES

Please everyone visit this link.

It shows the pathetic quality of the United States Federal system. It completely undermines the IDEA of the federal system. It sickens me to read that one of the most influential and amazing countries in the world cannot sustain a federal government and what it stands for (I'm not from the US, I'm from Ireland, so no malicious comments please!). To make my argument worthwhile I must provide an understanding of America's federal government. The government which we know it, based in Washington D.C., is what is known as a federal government. Essentially it dictates to each state's government what the rules and regulations are. The beauty of this is that each state has the ability to decide for itself wheather to follow these (particular) laws or not. An example is the death penalty. The death penalty was a piece of legislature passed as federal law, meaning each state has the opportunity to abide by this or not. Another, of course, is abortion.

Now, consider what the DEA have done. It states in the article that the DEA do not abide by each state's law. Nice and clear. However in no way understandable. What is the point in having such a government if the local, state and federal government itself cannot work together, as is stated in the article? Surely this is a massive infringement on the inner workings of these bodies? What i personally see it as, and I am in no way a person who jumps to extreme conclusions (OK maybe a little on the ann coulter thread :P), but this smells like the workings of a dictatorship to me. These places were doing what they were meant to be doing, growing marijuana for the people that "needed" it (lol arguably but fuck it, none of us need it). what they were doing was legal, there is no dispute about that.

What I am asking for, along with, of course, all of your opinions (and i cannot strain that enough) is the thoughts of someone with more knowledge of the US' federal government, and the implications this has on the people related to the incident, the DEA and of course THAT FUCKING WANKER Bush, if any. Also these bodies involvments. Would he have had anything to do with this? Do the DEA opperate on instructions given directly by the government, or simply the executive? Or do they effectively opperate as an individual with insane and shockingly intrusive and unjust powers? Also i seem to remember some sort of legislature passing involving people allowed to be arrested on suspicion of certain acts.... or was that in the UK? lol forgive my vagueness! Could this have anything to do with it?

I don't think many people with a liberal mind (and i mean that in the definition's sense, not the political) would argue against me that the DEA's acts were disgusting.

If Vi is around I would love you to respond! I really would like to hear what you have to say on this matter as I know you'd probably have a lot! And I'm saying that not because I want an argument, but because i really do want to hear what you have to say :)

*Weight off shoulders*!!!

Wednesday, January 17 sees Drug Enforcement Administration raid eleven Compassion Clubs in Los Angeles.
The DEA is on a reefer-madness rampageDrug Enforcement Administration agents raid 11 Los Angeles-area medical marijuana clinics, seizing "several thousand pounds of dried marijuana" and money. No arrests made yet. Video (soon to be) on YouTube.

The Associated Press, January 18, 2007

LOS ANGELES - Federal drug agents raided nearly a dozen medical marijuana clinics in California, seizing several thousand pounds of processed marijuana, along with weapons and money, authorities said.

Several people were detained, although no arrests were made after five dispensaries in West Hollywood and six others in Venice, Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley were searched Wednesday, said Sarah Pullen, a spokeswoman with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The raids highlighted a conflict between a California state law and the federal drug agency.

California voters in 1996 approved the Compassionate Use Act, which makes marijuana available by prescription for medicinal uses. The DEA, which does not recognize California laws legalizing medical marijuana use, has recently increased its enforcement.

Pullen declined to provide details of the latest investigation, saying the search warrants remained under seal.

"But obviously we are looking for marijuana and other illegal drugs, marijuana edibles and evidence of ongoing criminal activity and anything from paperwork to documents — you name it," Pullen said.

City officials in West Hollywood said they were surprised by the action, learning of the raid as it was happening. City spokeswoman Helen Goss said West Hollywood has a "long-standing commitment" to the use of medical marijuana for people suffering from illnesses like HIV and AIDS.

Agents in bulletproof vests, gloves and face masks left a West Hollywood storefront with boxes and trash bags filled, as about 50 protesters booed and shouted "states' rights."

At one dispensary, The Farmacy on Santa Monica Boulevard, amateur videographers and others mobbed officers filling three cars with evidence.

"Today's enforcement operations show that these establishments are nothing more than drug-trafficking organizations bringing criminal activities to our neighborhoods and drugs near our children and schools," said Ralph W. Partridge, head of the DEA in Los Angeles.

City of West Hollywood Officials Decry DEA Raids on Five Marijuana Dispensaries

Wednesday January 17, 2007

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE) - City of West Hollywood officials reacted swiftly today to news that the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had raided and shut down five medicinal marijuana dispensaries located in West Hollywood.

"The City of West Hollywood has had a long-standing commitment to the compassionate use of medical marijuana for those persons who are facing catastrophic illnesses," said City Manager Paul Arevalo.

The DEA's enforcement of federal drug laws against the dispensaries conflicts with Proposition 215, a ballot measure approved by the California voters in 1996 decriminalizing the use of medical marijuana.

The following five marijuana dispensaries located in West Hollywood were raided by the DEA today:

7828 Santa Monica - Alternative Herbal Health

7825 Santa Monica - Medical Marijuana Pharmacy

7901 Santa Monica - West Hollywood Caregivers

8464 Santa Monica - California Cannabis Pharmacy

8921 Sunset - West Hollywood Center for Compassionate Healing

Just last night the West Hollywood City Council introduced an
ordinance establishing permanent regulations to mitigate the impacts of medical marijuana dispensaries, following a two-year moratorium.

"The DEA raids came as a complete surprise to the City," said
Arevalo. "It is regrettable that the federal, state and local governments cannot work together on this issue."

The City of West Hollywood has been a long-standing supporter of the use of marijuana that is prescribed, dispensed and used for medicinal purposes. West Hollywood is home to a disproportionately large percentage of seniors afflicted with a variety of chronic illnesses, and people with HIV and AIDS, for which medicinal marijuana diminishes suffering.

Here are comments regarding today's DEA action from two West
Hollywood City Councilmembers:

"The state of California voted to allow marijuana for medical
purposes," says West Hollywood City Councilmember Abbe Land. "The City of West Hollywood along with other cities across the state have established regulations to govern the dispensing of medical marijuana, so that people whose lives depend on this drug can be assured of safe access to their medicine. The DEA should spend their time going after dispensaries that are not operating in accordance with local ordinances, as well as unscrupulous doctors who write illegitimate prescriptions," she continued.

"Today's actions again demonstrate the skewed priorities of the Bush administration and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration," says West Hollywood City Councilmember Jeffrey Prang. "Providing safe access to medical marijuana for those living with serious and often painful illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, cancer and other terminal diseases is something this City supports. We have worked closely with our community to insure these establishments operate safely and comply with the spirit of Proposition 215 adopted by the voters of California," he continued.

There is one big difference between California and Oregon when it comes to medical marijunan. Oregon doesn not sell any to their patients. They give seeds, clones, basic info, classes, explain how to set up, etc. but they do not sell. Seems like everything money changes hands there are problems even if the government has to invent them.

Well said Mogie. Of course the underlying problem is taxes. However the government want to appeal to A) Christians B) The elderly and C) parents. That's why they turn out top when it comes to this sort of thing. Ultimatly, it is of course to do with money, but also the governments reputation. Please don't ignore the undermining of the US' federal system!!

However i must say; the point is not that they were doing something ILLEGAL...it is that these clinics were doing something LEGAL. Completely LEGAL. Now that aggravates me.

dankciti, really sorry about that :S Tell him I say good luck :) I do have to strain though some workers are being detained, but not arrested. They may well be, but it seems unlikely. It is very possible the DEA will create a bit of cocaine which was "found" out the back, which is disgusting. lol it does seem like the perfect job! Give him my best if he's involved.

That's interesting about a superior committee though, I didn't know that was the case down the line.

Although it does say the DEA do not abide by any law's set by states either under federal legislation or not which is scary. They may as well be a terrorist organisation running around each state doing what they want. This goes back to my point of the pointless, which is having this so called federal government in the first place.

lol i know, how ironic. Although yourself being from California must know you people are in no way like the rest of America. California is my favourite place on earth by a mile. I love it for the people it has and the seemingly relaxed and liberal views. That's why this article pissed me off so much.

its a beuracratic placebo to push for the elections and such just like falling gas prices. Too True only in reverse. That raid is exactly why me and a couple a hundred thousand nevadans have not applied for the medical MJ paperwork from the state. Once you're in the system, the Feds know where you live and what you do (Grow Marijuana) Illegal as hell federally. I'd rather take my chances and plead my case if busted. There is a law that you can plead your case if you can get a Dr. to say it would help your condition. Although there are certainly many people who need and benefit from medical Marijuana, I believe the system is abused and some people are getting rich from the law. I don't know how much they charge, but in the raids, they usually confiscate large amounts of cash. I think you can see the possibilities of a cash heavy business where the Government doesn't collect one thin dime, It surely pisses them off, How dare we!

no fed involvment justifies no reason for federal tax either. only state should collect and RD medical uses and blah blah

the state shouldn't collect anything dank, unless they charge a small fee for printing out whatever paperwork there is.

i too don't understand why anyone would want to involve the state gvnmnt because it is subject to fed law. in mogies state they have done it right; it's free and they give you THC containing materials, incriminating the state itself under fed law. that takes some real state rights believers!!

i do everything i can to register. dr., every club in town, county card, state card. i WANT to be counted. i WANT to be known. i WANT them to realize how many of us there are. if we each went and registered the #'s would open some eyes. let them arrest me and the other 5000 patients in my county. where you gonna put us? they blocked the door. the DEA left. scared of a whole nother waco.

 i would be happy to pay a reasonable tax if the state had all the pwer to protect my rights, but apperently you have to pay the mob and the cartel to stand on this street corner.

problably why state doesnt rape us with more of that tax they cant collect if they cant protect, beuracratic extortion becomes a discouraging hustle.

and faded i among other work in their buildings and offices and drawers. the last thing i want is to be on one of their lists.:hump:

It's 1984. Let's face it. Cut the analysing, this is the beginning of the thought police. These are the preliminary stages. Call me a CRAZY liberal but it's there. An individual is not allowed to deny someone a service because of their religion, colour or background (or habits). However fair this seems, an individual should be allowed to make up their own minds on who they want to serve. The motives are irrelevant. What we live in nowadays, especially in the US, is a less extreme version of 1984. Effectively the thought police exist, we are told what to believe, we are told what to do, we are told what is right, what is wrong etc. This is insane. Actions should be punished; not emotional reactions. A vast majority of marijuana smokers, be it legal or illegal are perfectly harmless, yet we are being demonised as drug addicts, people who deserve no place in their particular societies. Granted America is extreme compared to many developed countries. I agree heavily with fdd2blk. I believe if we rebel as a society, no matter where we live, we will overpower any government. In fact it isn't a belief, its fact.

I do not endorse racism, sectarianism or sexism or any of the like; but i will always believe a person is allowed to do what they want as long as it affects noone else emotionally or physically (and ignorance is bliss in many of these circumstances).

If noone payed taxes, what exactly could the government do? Nothing. If everyone smoked weed in public, what could the government do? Nothing. Ok a State of Emergency would be declared, but that accomplishes nothing. The power of the government is very, very limited in this way. They manipulate the population to believe what they believe, to make their job easier and to shut us up. That is why the threat of the police is on us; to scare us, and nothing more. Do you really think every single murder is solved and brought to justice? Of course not!

In the UK marijuana was decreased to a class "C" drug, implying if caught in possesion (an amount which is judged to be used for soley individual use) only a caution would be given, no permenant record, nothing. However in the UK we also have close to true freedom of speech, we are allowed to visit what websites we want when we want, we aren't slaughtered for insulting our government, but quite the opposite. Holding to account the Executive is a heavy part of our government. EVERY WEEK the Prime Minister is faced with a half hour session dealing with anything any opposing party want to ask, ok there is a level of bureaucracyto be passed but that is irrelevant. The reason why freedom exists in the UK is because of this. The government is actually held to account. When Bush speaks in front of the public he reads a speech and answers questions thrown at him by members of his own party (nonetheless he still fucks up).
