Dead Spores

Through a series of stupid mistakes on my part, I isolated a particular strain I don't want. Fine. I went back to my collection of syringes of various strains and did some dish work with them - only, nothing germinates - NOTHING.

They have been kept in the crisper of my fridge for about 6 months and nothing in them is viable any more. I don't think the crisper has ever been the subject of freezing so what do you folks think happened?

I had the exact same thing happen, no idea why.

Did you have them as syringes or where you going spores > agar? I think it might be that the spores need more moisture than the agar provides (just to get going)

syringes - so they were wet, which might be the problem. I've revived 10 year old spores from a dry state on agar.

You can use Spore101, or SporeWorks, or even Micro-Supply.

If you're a beginner just order the syringe.

You can get them on Spores101 for 9.99+ shipping.

Like I said, if you're a beginner just stick with the needles for the first grow, and then make your own prints.

well i know they have the suringe with the spores already in them but i ordered the print on accident not paying attention so i would rather just get an empty suringe and use the print instead of buy a full suringe but where the hell do i get one at?

It's a pack of 10 for 9.99+shipping.

Also, since you're already going to have needles, look into making a LC (Liquid Culture) so that you can fill up needles and put them directly into your jars. Here's a link:

thats what i need to put into the spores in the rye right the make them germinate before i actually start growin them

You put the spores from the print into the needle. Then, use the needle to inject your rye jars and a few LC jars. From now on, you can just use your needle to get liquid from the LC and inject that into the rye jars, instead of buying needle or using prints.

Look up each step above on shroomery or shroomtalk, it will show you how to do each if you don't know.

sweet thanks guys i really appreciate it like i said this is a new experiment for me you can only learn through trial and error im buyin a kit from spores101 so im thinkin that should make all this a little easier instead of gettin all the supplies seperatly so with the liquid culture the spores are in there and i can just fill a suringe and inject it into the rye jars and be good to go

Here is a finished LC, a lil bit after you inject it with spores:

You shake that up and break it down a lil (some people put a piece of glass or a marble in there to aid in this) and you can pull it into your needle and then inject it into your spawn jar.

get yourself some petri dishes and some agar and make your own cultures - it is very very easy to do with prints and you will have an unlimited supply of culture.

You got a beginner-friendly agar tutorial? I'd like to learn something new tonight anyways, I haven't accomplished shit xD

ok cool man this is so helpful would i be better off gettin the agar since i already ordered a spore print on accident?? how long does it take to germinate in the LC

Get some agar and a few sleeves of disposable dishes. Follow the directions on the agar (50 grams per liter of water), sterilize the mix for 40 minutes and then let it cool just enough so the solution is still liquid. Pour a little bit in each dish and then let it solidify. If you have syringes, squirt a fraction of a ml into each dish and swirl the dish around. If you have prints, use a sterile loop, or wire or even a scalpel and scratch a bit of spores onto the knife blade - then smear the spores onto the surface of the agar. Then wait.
