Deep Tissue Culture

I saw something very "advanced" at my local hydro shop today, they had a small lab room set up where they were cloning without mother plants.

The guy said it was called deep tissue culture and that they were using stem cells preserved from long-gone mothers to produce new plants in a petrie(sp?) dish

I was impressed, anyone have experience with this?

I will be covering this topic in my journal. I have a lab as well, breeding, and cell culture. I dont use "old long gone" plants as they are long gone. I would love to know what they are using. I use pieces of stem to generate new plants, it can also be done using old seeds.

"it can be done using old seed"... I just tossed out a few hundred Afghan seeds that I found in my hash, back in the early 80's. This weed was a one hit wonder. Going to think out loud here guys. I wonder if they can do a culture with wheat or grapes to give us our owe Geneticly Modified Crop. Well might as well spark up another one.

they did a decent job coverng tihs all in an older issue of high times i believe the article was in.. the issue has to be atleast six or so months old by now, if not a lil older, and i think they even mention it on the cover, or is says something like advanced cloning techniques or something along those lines on the cover.. they don't get super in depth in the article, but they do give a fair amount of info on how to perform this ..

Seems like you need a lab for it, or at least a laminar flow hood.

The Super Starts/ Microclone kit is for home growers and does not use a special hood. Plants are grown in many small jars on Jello medium with hormones, Nutes, and preservatives. The mother jars produce several branches every thirty days that are cut to be grown into rooted cuttings. The rooting is in the culture jars too.

That was our kit, the Microclone tissue culture kit. I happened to pick up the mag in Hollywood, CA and saw the article, then realized the photos were my hands! Google "Microclone" for videos and see cannabis tissue culture on Facebook.

I wanted to correct the assumption everything had to be sterile. The area should be clean and filtered air is best but as the 100+ people who have taken the Microclone tissue culture workshops will tell you, it is the preparation and handling that need to be sterile. We regularly transfer and introduce dozens of cultured plants in open rooms using a plastic storage container to protect the open jars. Plants are washed in chlorine solution, the media and vessels are sterilized in a pressure cooker, and the tools are dipped in alcohol between each use. See the videos online under "Microclone".

Clean, vigorous, vegetative branch tips are best for starts. About 1-1/2" tall.
