Dried Seaweed Tips
I thought it would be good to get a thread going for dried seaweed since there seems to be a lack of information in one place about this resource. Please understand this is a work in progress and everything is from my current experience and opinion.
Remember, people will be "Google" searching this for years to come! Let’s give accurate advice based on personal experience!
Below are my notes and my experience thus far. I do not take credit for anything you read for I am learning how to use this resource and am simply jotting down notes I have gathered all over the net, in books and personal experience. If you have anything to add or have found other guides about dried seaweed, please share your find!
I am a personal grower and only grow for myself. If you have four plants or less, my measurements should be perfect for you. However, if you have a larger garden, simply increase the amounts I use.
Here we go
Concentrate mix: Dissolve 2 dry ounces per 1 quart of water and shake it up really well.
Always dilute the concentrate down even further with water!
My seaweed concentrate guide
1. Dried seaweed
2. Quart size bottle
3. 2 liters size bottle
4. Measuring utensil
Additional equipment:
Cooking scale
Spoon
Funnel
Measure out two dry ounces (56 grams) of the dried seaweed.
Using your funnel (or rolled up paper), dump the seaweed in your quart size container.
*Shake it very well. I mean shake the piss out of it. There will be seaweed stuck to the bottom. Holding the bottle upside down and performing short, quick “jerks” work well.
Your new seaweed concentrate should look like this (minus the cool comic art style).
Now measure out 200ml of your new concentrate with your measuring tool of choice…
And poor it into your 2 liter container. This is your one part of seaweed concentrate.
Now add water, the other 10 parts and you are done!
Remember to shake it up before you use it every time. Put in your sprayer and mist your plant leafs until they are dripping. Spray the top and the bottom of your plan leafs.
How to use
Foliar feeding: Dilute 1 part of your concentrate to 10 parts water.
I personally use a 2 liter apple juice bottle and fill it with 200 ml of my concentrate and the rest with water and shake it (refer to the guide above). I have been foliar feeding my plants while they are in the vegetation phase. I stop foliar feeding during the flowering phase because I do not want to spray the buds. This is just a personal preference.
On an unrelated note, I fertilize no more than once a week (7-10 days) with my organic nutrient solutions. I foliar feed seaweed once a week and when flowering starts, I soil feed seaweed once every two weeks. Again, this is what I have been doing.
Seed Treatment: This is not necessary and I personally have not noticed any difference using seaweed and not using seaweed when it comes to germinating seeds. I do it only because I have extra seaweed and all my seeds have germinated thus far. I have had seeds that did not germinate when not using seaweed, but I don’t think that is a factor, I think it was just by chance.
However, if you wish to use dried seaweed to germinate your seeds, here is how.
Soak the seeds with 1 teaspoons reconstituted dried seaweed diluted in 1 quart of water. I drop the seeds in the container with the mixture, wait a few seconds then dump it out. If you dump it out in the sink, make sure your seed(s) do not go down the drain. /guilty
Rooting Solution and Transplanting: I do not have any experience cloning! I always grow from seed! This information was gathered from other experienced growers who use seaweed. I do have experience transplanting and use my seaweed solution to water them after I transplant. I have transplanted with an autoflower strain using my seaweed solution and I believed it helped her with the transition.
Mix 1 teaspoon of concentrate to 1 quart water. Place cuttings in your solution of seaweed and water until roots develop, then plant. A good example of this would be if you use rockwool, simply treat the rockwool cube like you would with just water (i.e. just keep the cube moist with your solution).
Soil Application: If you are applying this product directly to the soil, (not spraying the leaves of plants) you do not need to dilute the product down. Mix 1 dry ounce in 1 quart of water and apply directly to the soil or around the base of plants and follow up with regular irrigation.
I have noticed that soil application works best with potted plants if you use 1 part of your concentrate to 10 parts water.
