Ducting is shocking me!

I'm baffled and cannot figure out where the electricity is coming from. Any of the aluminum ducting I touch gives off an electrical shock...not strong..but evident. My inline fan did the same thing even when ducting was removed off of it so I thought that was the issue so I replaced the inline fan. New fan doesn't give off the charge like the old one but still I have electric running through my ducting! I've checked to make sure my hoods arent touching any wires to the ballast or any wire showing

magnetic ballasts and fans can create magnetic charges which in turn can induce a voltage into the ducting. it will be minimal, just ground them out. Is there a metal gas line or cold water pipe near by? use that as your grounding means.

Thank you for the quick reply!! No there is not, but I'm switching to a digital ballast tonight so that should solve the issue correct?

try turning off everything electrical in the room 1 by 1 to see where it is coming from.as stated above, the ballast, fan, ect could be inducing current but I have never come across magnetically induced voltage strong enough to feel.
grounding would be a good idea but use the electric ground if possible,a cold water pipe would be better than nothing but don't ever, ever use a gas line!!

i would make sure you have ground at the plug, even if it's not shocking you anymore.

a gas line is going to be bonded to ground, it can be used for such small currents. cold water pipe is actually a very good ground, provided the house has a coper main service (just assuming it is as they've only just started using plastic in recent years)

and to the op, glad to hear that a digital ballast fixed your problem. just curious, were you using a converted high bay HID by any chance? thats what my plan is to do. get loads of them at work. cant complain with free lighting

No it was a growbright ballast, swapped it out for a quantum after a new hps bulb burned out in 3 days. Can't beat a 3 year warranty and dimmability, electricty savings are always nice.
