DYI Scrubber

I built one, I used 75lbs of carbon pellets in a 15gal bucket. 480cfm in-line fan...... it doesn’t work as well as I hoped. The fan that I used won’t push the air through the carbon, it mostly blows back. If I turn the cfm down to about half it seems to work but I’m just not going to have as many air exchanges as I’d like.

Yeah but they are super expensive but worth it. Will be using next round for sure.
Yeah I have six of them as scrubbers (12x48" Phat Filters with Vortex 12 Inch 1140 CFM Blowers) that haven't stopped since 2013. Amazing they are still going. If the power goes out and they stop it's about 10 minutes before the whole house starts reeking lol.

DIY scrubbers are very difficult to make; I've tried. Better off buying the cheap ones on Amazon that have the removable flanges so you can refill the carbon after they're used up. They do work very well in my opinion at least for small tent grows. For super large full room grows you may have to get a good brand that makes large ones.

Also, you want to suck the air through. Most will say it doesn't matter but they come with a pre-filter (sock) for that reason, to keep dust out of the filter so it doesn't coat the carbon rendering it useless.

I’ve successfully made DIY scrubbers out of HVAC duct caps, a reducer and a start collar, some hardware cloth and a few pounds of activated carbon from a pet store and a couple of woman’s stockings .. worked flawlessly for multiple grows on the same carbon. Best bet is to try and mimic the size of a name brand filter, for example if Phresh offers a 6” x 16” with a 2 inch bed I make a 6x16 filter with a 2 inch bed. The carbon is cheap enough that I can build once and refill my carbon for around $40-50. I feel like these diy bucket methods are good in theory (more carbon = more filtering) but you need to keep the air moving and too dense of a bed of carbon and your fan won’t be able to push/pull through it easily enough.

Yes, you are correct. I had about a 4-5” bed of carbon..... it was too much, the fan couldn’t push through it. So I reduced the thickness of carbon bed and the it works now
