I wanna be as informing as possible, but I am a newb so bear with me if I ramble but never give the important details.
I started these plants a week and a half ago. This is my first grow ever. I’m running off of Ed Rosenthal’s grower’s handbook (I think it may be the 3rd edition but it’s not technically my book, and doesn’t say 3rd edition anywhere but that’s irrelevant lol. Just fyi.)
I’m not trying to grow the best bud possible, but more so ‘experimenting’ to see how much ganja I can grow with minimal effort. That being said, I still like doing things to my best ability even if i’m not expecting the best possible outcome, so I wanna know how to fix this. If it needs fixing. I think it does…
You can see the little wispy thing circled in red.
They started to appear almost as soon as the plants sprouted and were put in soil. This picture isn’t a good example of how most of them look tho, just the only example that I could get the camera to actually focus on. They look kinda like little stray cat hairs, like the one shown, but most of the time they’ll be on the leaf tips sticking straight out. There doesn’t seem to be the other common signs of mites like webs near the base of the stems or little black bugs on the bottoms of leaves. I have checked all of my plants consistently and only see what looks like a few little dark brown specks of dust in random spots on the plants between about 10 plants. They’re teensy tiny plants, barely past a week old, so not a lot of nooks and crannies.
I used a jeweler’s loop to take a closer look at the little dark specks and they just look like little specks to me, not like any pics that I’ve seen of different mites. Maybe I can’t see them even with a jeweler’s loop?
I have no experience here, so I’m really just stumped. I figured that to be safe I should assume it’s a symptom of early mite infestation, so I bought some pyrethrum/sulfur juice from the store and hosed em down but it seems like whatever is making these little hair/web thingies doesn’t care about the pesticide/insecticide.
So, what do y’all think?
I’m in CA too, so it’s like 100+ degrees out rn!! I don’t want to keep treating the plants cus the spray already has an effect. I can tell my little babies are strugglin. Some of them look good and strong, but I didn’t get these from a reputable source. These babies are grown from mystery seeds; 1/3 are scavenged seeds from dispo packs, and 2/3 are leftover seeds my parents were using before they stopped smoking altogether years and years ago like around 2018-2020.
That’s part of why I’m not ‘trying to grow the best bud.’ For all I know, these are all gonna flower and be male plants. I will say: I’m impressed that I had a near 100% germination! Out of 12 seeds, only 2 didn’t sprout!
I’ve just been wanting to give growing a shot after reading Ed’s book. I think I’ve got to get some nutrients for them, and the heat obviously is a bit of a setback. All things considered, they’re in a good soil mix that some say you can plant them in and forget about em and they’ll be good still, and I can’t control the heat, so I’m not really concerned about those things. If they kill my plants somehow then so be it, I’ll still be here to try again. But if it’s mites that’s something that I gotta fix, if they kill my plants, they’ll kill the next ones too. You all know that i’m sure.
Okay That’s all for now. I know this is fairly long and maybe I’m thinking too hard about it, but I can’t find any pictures online that match what I’m seeing on my plants.
Thank you, dogbyte out!
