Easy air pump noise solution!

The loud humming noise of my air pump was getting on my last nerve. It's a commercial 20 watt 45/lpm joint but it was sounding almost like a gas generator lol. Even the bungee didn't help much.

I had some reflectix insulation and foil tape around so I decided to see what I could do. I noticed most of the noise was coming from the end with the round plastic filter cover and air intake. So heres the steps I took.

1.) Take a small 3 inch strip of reflectix and wrap it around a pencil to create a tube. Then tape it so it doesnt come apart. Twist it onto the air intake and tape it on all sides of the base.

2.) cut a strip to wrap around the plastic filter and tape it.

3.) Cut a circle piece to cover then end and tape it.

4.) Cut a strip wide enough to cover the medal body of the air pump. Cut a slit for the power cord and then put it on and tape it.

5.) Last, cut your last piece in a square and cut a slit for the outlet hose. Then tape it on.

You can also screw back on any feet or handle right through the reflectix.

Your Done!

This took me 5-10 minutes and cut the noise down by 50% easily. I'm going to do all my pumps like this from now on. Next time I will probably use a few inches of hose on the intake and wrap it in the reflectix. But regardless I check my air output and it hasnt changed.

you may want to make sure that the air pump is not running to hot, with that insulation on there you are holding in heat wich will most likely raise your nute temp, and possibly shorten the life of you air pump,I would try to put the air pump in something,I have used a cooler to cut down on noise, you can put a frozen jug of water in the cooler to keep the air cool.

I roomed with a physics prof at U of Houston and asked him what his research was on. Acoustics specifically how using a material extremely hard then a material extremely soft followed by a very hard material and a very soft material then a merely hard material and a merely soft material and so on. Layers can be very thin (think metal foils), sealing must be airtight. It's amazing logical you dig?
