edible potency question

My very first post. here I go.
I am wondering how you figure out how potent the infused oil is for making gummies? I get some now that say delta 50 mg. on the bag. What does that mean?
Am I going to get a bigger dose if I'm making them from flowers? (I don't know anything else about the ones I have now, other than what it says on the bag)
My goal is to make my own gummies that are as strong or stronger that what I'm currently buying.
My guess is that how potent the oil is might depend on the strain of pot? Could 50mg of one kind be weaker than 50 mg of another?
so confused. I've been a smoker for decades. I'm excited to finally get to pursue this more now that it's legal in my state.
Thanks for any help!

I guess I realize the gummy with be as strong as the number of tablespoons of infused oil you put in the mix. I just don't understand how you determine how strong the oil is once you make it.

honestly no idea but the way my brother would make edibles along time ago is he would make wax first usually bho than he would decarb the wax in the oven for like 20 minutes on low heat and then he would mix that wax into whatever he was making if he mixed 1 gram of wax into something he would say it had 1000mg of thc lmfao im not sure if he was right or wrong or whatever but thats just the way he would make them if he mixed .1 of decarbed bho he would say it was 100mg in strength etc.
hopefully someone with more experience can chime in im a noob lmfao

i think i found a answer too your question so i found this machine online while looking up how to check the potency of cannabis infused things and i found a machine called tcheck!
tcheck
Handheld device to measure your cannabis-infused:

  • Butter
  • Coconut oil & MCT
  • Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)
  • Alcohol tinctures
  • Dried hemp and cannabis flower, trim, shake
  • Winterized concentrates
  • Distillates / Isolates
Easy to understand results in minutes
  • mg/mL (or tsp, Tbsp, etc.) for infusions
  • % for flower and concentrates
i think this type of a device is your best bet if your trying too find out how potent your stuff is.

I have a Tcheck and love it. It's allowed me to standardize my edibles easily because not all extractions are equal.

So I can add as many ML to a recipe as I need to achieve a dose I'm looking for.

bra the minute i can afford one im buying a tcheck 2 it looks awesome! id love too melt some wax down into some butter or coconut oil and know exactly how strong it is! and it tells you how much mg per ml it has omegaw so say it has 10mg/ml if you add 10 ml does that make it 100mg thc strength?
also im gonna buy a levo C machine that thing looks amazing imagine having a levo c and a tcheck you would be a edible making god!

It's full cannabinoid profile not just THC but yes it would mean 100 mg if you use 10 ml of a 10 mg/ml extract. I have the Levo II and love it. However I decarb large batches at one time in the oven, it's easier for me.

yay! thanks so much for the helpful response. I have a Levo C ordered and it comes with a Tchecker thing I just didn't know if it was really a thing that works. hahaha. so damn new to all of this. It feels really weird to be in this space at this age. I never thought I'd see the day when this would be legal!

I think you made a good choice. There's some argument that the Tcheck isn't accurate enough. I can't say how it stacks up against Laboratory reference grade tests but for dialing in my edibles so there's no more moon shots has been a god send. So for me a 20 mg edible I make performs like every other 20 mg edible I make. I don't buy edibles or flower from dispensaries so I can't offer how it might stack up against that. But it gave me consistency between batches. I'm looking forward to hear what you think of your new toys ;D

do they say delta 8 or delta 9 or something like that? If so they are not your typical THC edibles, often times the delta-8 THC you find in commercial products is usually synthetically made from CBD.

It may be difficult to compare the two so you may want to start by making a batch of your own and using that to determine if you need more or less

all they say is delta 50 mg. so no idea. But that is what I was wondering if they could be two different things. Thank you so much for the help!
