only if you want to turn them on from a remote location or a controler, and heres the kicker, and *want* to.

contactors are just basically relays (with better contacts)

I was just worried about safety. I currently have the two ballasts both plugged into two a surge protector which is plugged in to the timer. I understand these lights generate most of the current when they are initially switch on. However, I think if I get a separate timer and have one turn on five minutes prior I can at least avoid a strong initial surge. Does this seem adequate? Anyone running multiple ballasts please let me know how you have them wired. Thanks

As long as your surge supressor is rated above the combined amps of your ballast you should be fine. I could be wrong, but I think the only real improvement would be to have 2 seperate surge supressors. Not that you have to. But, that would isolate them from each other some more. If I remember right the outlets are not, on most, isolated from each other.

They should have no problem at all on one thou, just typing outloud.
