exhaust system setup

im wanting to set up my 400w hps and trying to figure the best way to keep the bulb and room cool and minimize smell. the box will be 3.5 x 3.5 x 6ft

i just want to scrub the air and bring it through the hood and push it out from there (see drawing!) im high right now so thatll explain why its all detailed

im thinking of using a 6" vortex inline fan, would that be enough?

blow the air out in as straight a line as possible; minimize curves/kinks in the ducting. I like mounting the filter directly to the fan, mounting that combo to the cieling, then blowing straight thru the light via a lenth of ducting just long enough to allow for light height adjustments. I like to mount the fan/filter to the cieling and open up a passive intake downlow and keep the fan running 24/7 for scrubbing and constant "fresh" air thru the garden. even better- mount another carbon filter on the passive intake. or one of those little hepa shroom caps. (I'm takin super silver haze loads to the brain... hope that made sense.

What type of fan are you using?

I cant figure out what type of fan to use.... any not too expensive suggestions?

that 6" fan will be great but whats up with all the unnecisary bends?

i use a stanley blower from walmart.it was 45 bux and 300+ cfms.i love it along with many oter RIU'ers .im using it to cool 2x400w in my tent now with no problem.i do have a window ac in room tho.check out my sig,i know i have bends in my duct but w.e it works very well.

hey bud, you goT that stanley blower ducted to cool the light? and rigged to a carbon filter? 300+ cfm's for $45- thats a steal. otherwise , I would reccomend "can fans" and also "can filters", for the size space we're talking about, you could get 6" fan and carbon filter for around $250 or less.

Make sure you get a good exhaust with good cfm. And I would also agree its better to have a straight line then a zig zag

If you want to cool the bulb too, put the vortex AFTER the hood so that it's sucking air over the bulb instead of blowing air at the bulb as you had illustrated. I.E. : Filter -> hood -> vortex motor -> to outside. And get rid of that loop.

i dont want to put the fan after the light because ive heard that having hot air costantly going over the fan can cause it to overheat, shortening its life.


Thanks for everyones input. Heres my revamped idea. The bend is kind of over exaggerated but you get the point. shoud the fan connect directly to the filter and then push the air over the light or like it is in the drawing, pulling through the bend then pushing directly through the hood? which 6" fan would be better, for sound and air, a 270cfm or a 440cfm?

how it is in the new drawing is fine... or you could directly attach filter to fan(and fan to light for that matter).i like filter straight on the fan because i KNOW smell isnt an issue(ducting can "leak). up to you. but basically so long as the fan to the light is a straight shot, and your exhaust goes out asap (also as straight as possible.) your good. the 270 cfm will be good for this grow, also it is definatley less loud.

if ur worried about sound the stanley blower is a little loud.now that mine has insulated duct on each end its much more quite.overall i fucking LOVE my stanley blower.

A properly designed fan should cool itself.
