Extreme attack of paranoia

So today I went out to water my plants, which have been in the ground for about a week and are already up to my knee, and I saw that one of them was lying on the ground appeared to have been cut down. What alarmed me was that the stem did not appear to have been chewed on by a deer because the cut was pretty clean. After several hours of going over all of the possibilities I had convinced myself that someone had purposely cut the plant down in order to get me to walk in front of a motion sensing camera. I really thought that i might have just been been photographed watering my plants. As it turns out, after going back about an hour ago to check for any animal tracks I was wrong. There were deer tracks all around where my plant was growing. So now i know who is trying to set me up, those god damn deer.

Deer did the same fucking thing to my bare root sycamore trees. FUCKING DEER! And would someone mind telling me how the hell it was that my dogs didn't help me out? Somebody throw me a bone here!

Well, it could be that the dogs were busy defending you from a marauding band of rabid polar bears on Harley Davidsons who were launching an assault on your home with the goal of eating you and your family alive. You don't recall getting attacked by rabid polar bears on Harley Davidsons that night, do you? Huh?

OK, I guess that's the proof right there. Buy your dogs big steak dinners, complete with baked potato.

Soap is not a good idea because after the perfumes wear off animals can smell the fat or tallow that the soap is made out of, and that can actually attract animals. Unless of course you are using synthetic soap. Best way to deal with deer is to feed them something they like set away from your plants such as an apple flavored mineral block with some corn on the side. Google "what deer like to eat" for more info.

Hate to tell you but you also have rabbits. Deer will eat the plant starting at the top - leaves & stem. Rabbits will chew the stalk cleanly & leave the plant lay there just like it was sliced off.

Good reply tcmike. Deer and Rabbits have a way of biting through the stem and making it look like a clean cut. I learn this the hard way last summer:-(

Aha.. well, I know for a fact we've got wascally wabbits, too. Sure did feel like I wasted a good bit of money (and water) on those trees.

Plants chewed at the bottom can also be the work of wood rats...seen 'em decimate plants..a good deer repellant can be made by taking a dozen eggs and cracking them into a container of some kind, adding some water and maybe some cayenne pepper, mixing it all up and letting it sit out in the sun for a few days...make sure the container has a ventilation hole or she'll blow scotty! It'll start to smell REAL rank--that's what you want--then use a kitchen strainer to pour the equivalent of 3 eggs to 2 gallons of water into a sprayer and spray the whole plant...deer are herbivores and don't like it...as for rats, traps are the way to go...if using the wooden ones they should be tied to something with some masonry twine or something or they'll disappear. Good Luck!

Thats funny, i just went to check on my plants and i saw a wabbit. By the way when i was fishing to today i spotted a mountain lion. It was less than 100 yards away from me. Whats scary is that mountain lions roam on 25 square miles and my plants are growing less than 5 miles from where i saw it. So its nerve racking going out there at night.

Some chicken wire is going to do you ALOT of good - deer don't like stepping on anything metal, so if you put fence screen/chicken wire down around on the ground too it would also help (besides the obvious - putting a cage around your plants). Deer and wascally wabbits really hate the smell of marigolds - pretty much any plant that has milky sap they don't like, so you could plant some in a perimeter around your plants.

Putrified eggs in a spray bottle work really well too -- a couple eggs, fill with water, leave in sun, shake, spray. It smells like HELL, but once it drys, humans can't smell it, only critters. The only bummer is that you have to reapply after every rain. But it does work. I live in a place where we had a pretty good drought in '05/'06 and the deer thought my garden right next the house was a buffet. The eggs worked, the wire/fence works, and also stringing heavy duty fishing line around at deer height works if they are just cruising through, they spook when they hit it, especially if it has bells or cans on it.

Pissing helps, but it doesn't seem to have much effect if the area is too urbanized. You could also get some predator urine stuff (they have synthetics that are good). There are little resevoir thingys that you fill and leave in say a tree (or on your chicken wire cage) and they just smell like coyote so the deer etc. stay away - but you will want to keep them full.

Good luck and happy :leaf: growing!
