Yea you can plant them Like that. I'm not certain that would be the best method as the post above stated. But the roots will root right on through them. Just having them sit on the ground they will root into it.
I have put 3 gal smarts into the ground because I couldn't get the pot of without cutting it. They rooted through and everything went fine. I think without the double pot they may root much quicker.
