Faith

Is life all about faith? For example, most beleive that everyone in life is an individual human and not just a contruction of their imagination from birth till death. At what point can we say that we don't need faith? To know for certain about anything at all. Truth is, we cant, and won't. So science, religion, whatever even in the end if god existed and we went to heaven would still require faith in that reality to be the be all and end all of everything, nothing beyond, which would not seem likely as i cant begin to describe whats in store... Just an example.

...I've liked reading http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panentheism

The idea that god exists outside of the universe (also in it as demiurge) appeals to me. If I am projecting my world, then, to me, it follows that what is outside of me comes from my mind - sol - soul - psyche. My psyche is contained in 'golgotha' - 'the place of the skull' but things / events happen outside of it. The sun shines and stuff grows on earth as a result. (f.e.)

Maybe dark energy is 'god's skull', the container for the universe's suns. <---just having some fun there and purposely amplifying. (...and also pointing to 'faith' in another description)

to me the amazin part of life is it is what you make it. i dunno if you were tryin to say we cant live without hope, but that to me is false. i can think of a lot of things to live for. my friend and i were havin a conversation about the whole imagination idea and what my question is if all of this is my imagination then how do all of you feel that you're real to me? like if its my dream or whatever im in then why do you all have consciousness and think you are your own person in my dream?

If we had faith in nothing whatsoever, not even in the reality around us, everything would continue regardless. Faith isnt a necessity. With that said, to get anything done in this world you have to have faith in that reality enough to believe your actions can effect it.

I had a dream vivid as life last night, As bizarre as things were in my dream it all seemed real and perfectly natural to me. The second night in a row. The people in it, just like in real life, each had their own personalities, views, etc. Kind of creepy when you think about it, isn't it?

I'm sure all of you are familiar with alternate reality theories. I almost wonder if those dreams that are that vivid are us plugging into another us in one of those realities. Not likely, but its an eerie suspicion I just can't seem to shake.

i wonder if they´d get plugged into our reality at the same time, switcharoo. :)

Either that or experience our life when we're awake and their asleep sometimes. Being we're the same person may not notice the difference.

Hmm... 50/50, it seems like the natural progression of the conversation, but it is possible the OP feels his thread has been jacked, so lets ask him...

OP- Would you prefer we create another thread on dreams? If so, I will be happy to.

EDIT: crap, he's offline...†L† okay, I'll create another thread and create a link to it.

Maybe it's just semantic, but I understand that faith is belief without evidence. This is not a good thing, and is not a good path to knowledge. I think that some people use the words faith and trust interchangeably, but there is a big difference: trust is based on evidence. I trust that when I drop something it is going to fall to the ground, I trust the sun will rise in the east and fall in the west. These things are predictable and measurable, and the evidence is the same each day. I also trust in the scientific method: I don't have the capacity to prove most discoveries right or wrong myself, but I watch many people attempt to falsify hypotheses through peer review. I trust the process as the evidence mounts, and because it encourages my skepticism, doubt and inquiry. The older I get, the more I realize that my certainty means very little when it comes to reality, I've been absolutely certain of things that turned out to be not even close to true. But the more diligent I am about considering all the data available, the more often my certainty is rewarded...

I can see what you're saying, and from here that looks somewhat like how I experience a lot of life. I don't always know the exact detail, I wasn't born with a lab coat on. But on the artistic side, I need to explore in a 'purely' intuitive vehicle. A proper method of exploration usually bears fruit, while a totally chaotic 'scanning' sometimes provides little dividend. I guess the problem lies in how closely related / misunderstood intuition and chaotic scanning can be. I'm speaking of chaos in terms of speed in this post.

My personal take on faith is more inclusive: belief without complete/conclusive evidence. I am essentially a materialist; I don't believe in souls or magic. Since I cannot prove that the mundane and the real are the same ... since I believe but cannot prove that i am my neurochemistry ... I accept that this is part of my faith. cn

faith= belief in something only because you want to...regardless of what anyone says or what anyone does.

i dont think faith is bad, depending on what you put your faith in.

faith in yourself= good
faith in something your not positive exists or not (god) = lieing = bad

Faith is one of those words that have different meanings depending on its usage. That's why it is so tempting for theists to equivocate the word creating a fallacious argument. Faith can mean strong belief in something without or contrary to the evidence, which is what religious faith is. Faith can also mean very high confidence in something based on prior experience or knowledge. This is what having faith in the sun rising tomorrow or faith in the scientific process. Although there are similarities between the definitions, they are different enough to cause this confusion that people seem to have.

As far as god, I believe weather or not 'god' exist depends on your definition of god. I do believe in a god, I just have problems believing that it cares for us on an individual basis. My thoughts are all existence in space as a whole as an entity would be god. But then the question comes would it as an entity have a consciousness? Even if it did, I have a problem believing that consciousness would care at all about every subatomic particle as a separate entity.
