i usually add about 25% perlite to my ffof mix.. i just grab w/e is laying around at the time and do three scoops ffof and one scoop perlite, mix it up pretty good, and do another set like that, mix, etc, till my pots are full. :D

which shit?? ffof or perlite?? perlite is super cheap.. i got a big ass bag for pretty cheap, don't remember how much, but it was cheap..

i pay about $15 or so for the 1.5 cubic yard of ffof...

i add the perlite to make the soil looser and give more aeration to the roots.

perlite is pretty cheap nowadays.
If you have a couple extra bucks to spend what i like to do is mix 3/4 cup of hydroton per gallon of soil.
allows quick drying and good aeration, but im sure perlite could do the same thing.
i just have a thing for adding hydroton

-2 inch layer if perlite on the bottom of your pot or grow bag, and a 2 inch layer on the top surface of the soil. The bottom layer helps with drainage. The top layer help keep bugs out of your soil and helps keep moisture in your soil longer. Plus it looks really professional when you show your friends :)
-If I'm short on soil I'll use perlite as a filler but usually just the ocean forest with-out mixing in perlite.

If you are starting from germinated seeds I would mix FFOF, Peat and Perlite. I tried just using straight FFOF with a little extra perlite and the FFOF burned my plants. Once I started the FFOF/peat/perlite mix the seedlings took off!! Once they are hearty and healthy and when u go to a bigger pot use FFOF and perlite.

HTH, best of luck.

I am using ffof with about 35 percent perlite mixed in. The perlite works real well at keeping the soil drainage just right inbetween waterings. Next time I'll use a taste more perlite. FFOF has not been hot for my seedlings. They have done just fine with no problems. Nothing but water for the first 30 days.

I havnt had an issue with my seedlings in FFOF. I pop um and stick um in a cup of soil and roll with it. Never had a problem realy. I mean some cuttings dont make it but I always take extra. Anybody try the growstones?
