Ok so i know this may have posted about 1000 times on these forums and all across the internet but i thought i would dumb it down a little bit further just so an average grower with little or no experience can still get some nice rewards.
This picture here shows how a "Typical" cannabis plant would grow without any training.
And as you can imagine, the main cola will be the only one that takes advantage of the light that it is under.
By creating multiple bud sites or *COLAS* you can train that exact same plant to take full advantage of the lights, thus giving you a much higher yield of perfect and full buds rather than smaller loose/airy buds.
Once you have completed this step yes the plant will look bare but if you have your light setup right and your room is correct is should only take a few days until you see that baby bounce back TWICE as good as before.
Now after they grow back all you need to do for the next 2-3 weeks or so is PINCH the growth tips inside all the fresh growth to again promote a doubling of budsites.
Above is an example of how to Pinch/FIM the new growth tips.
You can do this as many times as you desire during your Vegetative stage though i recommend leaving it at around 4-10 Colas as it is alot easier to manage and 60 colas doesnt mean it is garantee'd to produce more product at the end.
Now you will also notice during this process that your plants will get really bushy especially while using MH globes, there will be shoots EVERYWHERE and fans in places you didnt know they could even be.
So to combat this i defoliate ALL of the growth besides my top fans and maybe one other fan per bud site/cola on every plant.
I end up defoliating around 3 times during my Veg cycle, which is around 6-8 weeks.
Coming closer to the end of your Veg stage the plants will most likely be around 1-1.5ft tall and the bud sites will be all different shapes and sizes (which is no good because then you only get around 1/4 of the plants receiving the light that it needs)
Light penetration is absolutely everything when attempting to grow high yields, if ALL of your bud sites dont receive the same amount or near enough then you will only get half if not less of the reward.
So now i will show you what i do before i ready myself to flip into flower so that i can control my even canopy and ensure all my plants get the same amount of light.
These are my current babies, Jack herer. (first time growing this particular strain)
Now as you can see with my manifolds here this particular strain didnt respond as well as others to the style i was employing, may not be the same for everybody maybe i wasnt thinking properly at the time but it works all the same from my experiance.
So youve got 4-16 growth tips and a bushy ass beast that needs to be tamed, whats next right?
I then go through my plant and select the healthiest and strongest bud sites to use and all the rest are cut off and prepared to be clones.
After that i defoliate EVERYTHING below my top 2 sets of fan leaves around the growth tips, you can leave more fan leaves if you really dont want to wait the extra 7 days for your plant to recover however i find it alot easier to just wait the extra time.
You obviously do not NEED to remove as much as i have and there are many arguments as to whether it is even required but i am a firm believer in defoliation.
Once you done the defoliation or skipped it whatever your preference is, its time to think about how to create a flat and even canopy.
I go about this by marking out where i want to tie my plants down or where they will fit and then drilling holes in the lip of my pots.
Then using rubber coated wire i hold bend my bud sites down to create a flat canopy and yes for 6 hours or so it will look like they are facing the floor or the walls, but they will near instantly start facing the light (naturally) and then continue to grow at that same rate.
Now if you get lazy and some shoots grow taller than the others you can leave it and just allow it or you can keep an eye on their growth and if it gets out of hand simply tie then down to match the same height as the rest again.
Always removing the LOWER leaves/growth once every 2 weeks or so will ensure your plant gets full light penetration which is absolutely CRUCIAL during the flowering stage to obtain those full size buds throughout the plant.
Well i think thats the end of this little ''lesson'' then, i hope that ive helped atleast one person as it took alot of time to compile.
Thanks for your time if you've read this.
