FIM'ing plants,scar tissue

Against my better judgment, but with most of the advice I've read on this site (save a few dissenters) I tried topping my 3 week old plant yesterday. I tried to FIM it, I believe (cutting it about slightly above the top node) and today the scar tissue left behind is black. I can't find anything about what topping looks like immediately afterwards, so I just hope I did this right. If not, is there still hope? Will there still be upward growth?
