First Grow. AK48 in a cfl grow box.

Well I've already started my first grow but figured I'd start a journal to add to this site instead of just taking information. So here's what we've got.

I started with a uhaul shorty wardrobe box. I lined it with an emergency blanket I got at walmart. I've got two fans at the top with two DIY carbon filters on them. They're rated at 78 cfm but with the filters it doesn't push as much air out of the box. I cut passive intake vents on the front. Originally temps were around the low 90's but I've been able to drop them into the low 80's to high 70's.

I've got 4 cfl's running. They are 26w each if I remember right. They are 50000k and have around 1700 lumes. I also have a south facing window and I'm able to keep the plant in it's box while I move it with the sun and keep the cfl's on it. Having never grown before I can't really say if it's helped any but I figure it's the sun so how bad for the plant could it be.

I've been using organic soil with bat guano mixed in. Then I also got an organic (supposidly) generic plant food that's 5-5-5. The bat guano is 10-3-1. I mixed both of those into the soil on one plant and none in the other just to see which would grow faster. The one with neither in it was not able to sprout even though it germinated properly. (paper towel method). The plant that survived seems to be a champ though. It's put up with all my n00b mistakes. So far no nute burns or any burns for that matter.

Troubels, originally it was the temp but I've got that sorted out. Next issue I had was the plant didn't want to stay upright. I'm not sure if this is because I was placing it in the sun while it was still under cfl's or because it grew so fast it got top heavy, but I had to strap it to a stick I found outside to keep it upright. I removed the stick last night before I went to bed and added more soil almost up to it's fake leaf thingies. It seems to be standing upright on it's own. while I have it in the sun I have a fan on it but in the box there's only the computer fans for exhaust.

The next issue I've been having is watering. I live in a desert so it's a little dry here. We've also been having high temps for this time of year too so I don't think that has been helping any. The soil seems to dry out on top but is moist much further down. I can water and by the next morning I can stick fingers in up to the last knuckle and it's fairly dry. I try to let it dry out so the roots will stretch some and fill the pot. I placed it in a fairly big pot since the second plant died and I have plenty of space to grow something big. Last night the leafies were all drooping and sagging. After doing some research I decided that I haven't over watered and added some water. With in a few hours it seems to be perking up again. I checked the plant before heading off to work and it seems to be doing fine. Just about every leaf is starting to point upward. Not sure if that's good or bad.

I've been running it on a 19/5 light cycle as I only work part time so I turn everything but the fans off while I'm at work and then when I get home I turn the lights on and move the box to the window. We're on day 14 today since I put it in the ground and it's working on it's 4th and 5th nodes. I'm toying around with the idea of germing 3 more seeds since I have two small planters 1 big planter and I was thinking about buying some party cups and doing a micro grow with this bigger one. I'm also hoping to get at least one male so I can make some seeds.

I'll post all the pics I have once I get home but work is slow so I decided to kill some time and make this first post. I'm hoping to be able to have my own bud by christmas time. Figured it'd be a good gift to myself. :-o

Sounds like this shoul be a fun one. Good luck bro I am also growing some AK-48 and Master Kush under Cfls and they are looking awesome for so young, very fast growers. Anyway I will be starting a journal too soon but definetley gonna follow this one. And if you got room and seeds y not plant one or two more. I started with one bagseed that was NL/blueberry cross in a party cup for fun before i started my Females, gonna flower soon to see if she belongs in the box or not. Had it in a party cup but transplanted to a butter container because it was in scotts soil and I wanted to get it in my fox farm mix just in case it is a female. Anyway cant wait for the pics, Grow on world, Grow on

Thanks for the post. :) I heard AK48 was a great strain for n00bs because it can endure through the mistakes. Once you get your journal up throw me a link. My original plan was to start with two plants since this is my first grow. Then I figured if I got a male I'd just make some seeds and then turn it into butter. I have a friend that's an amazing cook. Her cookies could probably create world peace if she'd try. Being a first time grower I don't want to start too big. I want to learn all I can off of a small grow or two so I don't mess anything up too badly. :-P It's amazing how you can read everything and it's still not enough. Experience is always the best teacher.

Okay so here are the pics as promised. The last few are of the plant today. The one with the stick was taken yesterday though. The others are of me putting everything together. You can see the different products I used. Not much has changed except I've got two exhaust fans with the carbon filters on them now and passive intakes on the front. Today my girl is 14 days old.

Well this are going well. Figured I'd post a quick little update going into the weekend. This is day 15. I made a few modifications to the box. Now I can raise and lower my lights instead of moving the plants. I also started germinating two more seeds since I've got the space. In the second pic you can see the first plants little deformity. But I love her anyways.

There's been a lot of new growth. The last post was actually day 15 and these pics are now day 17. The plants seem to be moving along nicely. I've been able to spread the watering out to every other day now. I can see one root peeking out the bottom but only at one of the drainage holes. It seems to have stopped there. I've also started germinating two other seeds. They should be ready to put into soil in 12 to 24 hours.

On a side note, I was thinking about pouring some water into the rat cage I have the pots sitting on. It's very dry here and I think that might help with the humidity. You can see in the 3rd pic how it's sitting on the folded up cage. There's about 4 to 5 inches below that I could pour water into. Any thoughts on this?

Well last night it decided to get cold. Temps in the box stayed around the high 70's with the lights on but when I turned them on it was in the high 60's. The two seeds I started germinating are now in soil. I've got them under two lights. I might be adding more lights later. Here are the pics for day 18.

Wow.... i love this carboard box thing you've got going on here. Makes me want to build one, could even just stack another one or a third of one on it if you wanted more size. Subbed.

Yeah it was all really cheap to put together. The box was $8 but I'm sure you can get them for less. Then the lights were $5 total. The cords were just $1. The emergency blanket was $1. The most costly thing of my grow were the seeds and buying the computer fans and the carbon filters. The thing I like about it though is that if I throw some clothes on top of the box it looks like I'm just a slob. But there's plenty of room for the plant to get nice and tall as it wants.

Thanks Potentrx7. Do you have a journal up yet?

Well I just opened the box about 30 minutes ago and it went from being a little droopy last night to being really perky today. Temps were in the high 60's when I got home. I'll have to keep watching that as winter comes. one of the seedlings has started to make it's way into the world. You can see it peaking out in one of the pics. Still nothing on the second seedling but it's only the beginging of its' second day in soil. Well here's the pics.

Btw...if you're still having trouble with droopiness or the plant being topheavy, just put a fan facing directly at the plant blowing a gentle breeze...it'll strengthen the stems and help solve that.

Thanks Stuggz. I put a fan on it while I have it out in the sun but I don't have one that will fit in the box. So far it's been better now that it's bigger. I think she was growing faster than she could support.

Here's day 20. The two seedlings have made their way out of the dirt. One's actually just lost it's shell as I started to upload the pics. The second seedling is a little behind the other. The older plant is starting on it's 7th node now. I gave it a good watering last night with some nutes and she seems nice and perky. Well here's the pics for today. Enjoy

We're now at 3 weeks old. She's looking good and growing fast. I may have to adjust the lights by the end of today. Only one of the seedlings made it. I moved some of the dirt to check on the other one and everything was shrivled and dried up. So we've got two plants going. I'm probably going to switch to 12/12 lighting in 16 to 20 days. Just want to get the seedling to a good place before I start to flower. I also included some pics of the box. I moved the thermomitor over so that the sun didnt' shine right on it during the day time. It was throwing off my temps. I also made little hooks on the sides so I can move the lights up and down easily. I just used zip ties. Here's the pics for day 21

Well we're not at day 22. The seedling has started it's second set of leaves. You can see them starting to poke out. The plant is going nicely. There's alot of growth going on by the stem so I tried to get some nice pics of that. Everything seems to be going great. here's the pics.

Day 22 (5).jpgDay 22 (2).jpgDay 22 (4).jpgDay 22 (1).jpgDay 22 (3).jpg

on a side note I don't think the seedling now is as big as the first plant was. this could be genetics but it could be that it hasn't been in the sun like I did with the first plant. The first plant has been getting around 5 hours of sun while still sitting under the CFL's. The seedling hasn't been in the sun yet. This might be an interesting experiment. I don't think I've seen a grow with both the sun and CFL's. The plant does seem droopy at the end of the day but once it's gone through 5 hours of dark it's really perky. I'm not sure if this is because it's stretching to try to find light or possibly the sun's effect on the plant. If I get a chance I'll be taking pics later today so you all can see.

Well halloween weekend was quite crazy so I didn't have much time to do any updates. I moved the seedling into a big pot. It's working on it's second set of leaves now. The big plant is doing well. I had to move the lights up again. I wanted to wait until the seedling was in it's second week to go into flower but I also can't have this getting too big. I've still go ta little bit of room to play with though. I also added a fifth light. It's a 2700K light. I placed it lower and in the middle to hit the lower leaves on both plants. Here's the pics for day 25.

We're almost into week 4. so far she's looking great. Lots of growth. Not too much longer till we go into a flowering light cycle. I'll most likely start next monday or thursday. I just want to make sure the seedling as the best possible chance to grow as much as she can before we start.
