first grow issues

I have having some problems issues with my first grow and would love some feedback. I started these seeds in paper towels than moved them to a germination chamber with B-1 in the water and no lights. I think this is where I went wrong, the plaints popped out very quickly maybe within a day but I didn't turn on the light for four days. So when I did finally turn on the light (24w florescent) they were an inch or two tall (I also added some grow big nuts). So when the leaves started to grow the stem could no longer support the leaves. I used tooth picks and straws to support the stems hoping they would become stronger. Four days later I moved them to my drain and fill table using B-1 and grow big nuts with 400w hps (temp 80-90 humidity 60-70). I moved ten plaints and none of them were able to support their leaves. Now, eight days later most of them are still unable to support their leaves. A few seem to have recovered but the ones that didn’t have obvious weak points at the base of their stem. I do have a fan in the room indirectly blowing on the plaints so they get barely enough of a breeze to make them move. Is there anything else I can do for this? Or have I completely missed the mark on this and there is something else going wrong?

same problem mate

i have a feeling is because the hps, think it puts so much growth in the leaves that surpasses the stem

ive seen most of the people with clones under fluoro

i have a 400 hps on 1 sq meter 7 plants, after 7 days since starded germinating they are 8cm and pretty big they are compared to the average

i really dunno, iam a newbie

hope someone clarifies

use bendy straws slit down the side n pop em over your stems also make sure your plants have a fan on em to strengthen them up also you should maybe have repotted them deeper like up to the first leaf set

I believe my problem was caused by stretching. When I germinated my seeds I waited three or four days too long before turning on the light. At that point the plaints where already three or four inches tall and very thin. So when the leaves grew the stems couldn’t support them.

I added some silica blast to my solution and that made the steams grow ridiculously thick. I didn't really support the steams at all the plaints just started turning for the lights an as the steams got thicker and stronger eventually the steam has stood back up. I started supporting them with straws for a couple of weeks but nothing worked till I added the silica blast. The side effect from the silica blast is the plaints got huge! The only reason I can think for that is thicker steam must mean larger nut supply so larger growth. Needless to say I will be using that from now on regardless of steam problems.

With regard to the reflective lid, that is polyshield. I found some polyshield that is glued to an inch thick Styrofoam board so I used that to cut out a lid for my watering table.

Here are some pics of the five surviving plaints. I started with ten but half of them didn’t survive the stretching. It’s a good thing I eliminated some because as you can see the plaints have filled every bit of space.

This is true, I wanted some side lighting and it’s hard to beat the price of CFLs. And I am very happy with the result. I added them on three walls and in the corners. The plaints got really bushy after that. Not sure if you can over light. I tried looking that up but couldn't find anything about that.

Today was my first day of 12/12 (it was supposed to be yesterday but my timer failed to tick) looking forward to seeing if there is any change when the lights come on in a couple of hours.

With regard to the HPS, yes I am still using it. It gets great penetration but if I had to do it over again I would get a separate ballast and reflector. I thought it would be less expensive but it turns out its just more difficult to get the light on the plaints evenly because the reflector is so boxy. I guess at some point I will remove the ballast and just get a separate reflector I think.

You can't "over light" the plants, its the side effects from the light you need to worry about. Heat and such, as long as you have them under control you should be fine. their lookin good BTW are they showing any signs of sex yet?

Yeah funny thing about the heat. The HPS was keeping it too hot. I found a really cheep used portable AC unit, that kept the room a little too cooled. Some I figured, hey add some more light. Yeah CFLs don't put out much heat. But I got it straight now, right about 80 in the light.

Actually Ribbet you can make a plant sick with to much light.Heat and dryness are just part of it.You can over exspose a plant in certain stages with too much light

Not entirely sure how to sex yet but I guess I will need to figure that our soon. is there an easy way to separate the males so I can keep growing them but not have them impregnate the fems. These are all just bag seeds so I am afraid most of them are male. How long into budding should I look for sex?

Yeah you take the males to anoter room seperate from the females and keep it closed and dont go from the male room to the female room with the same clothes on as 1 little pollen pod can fuck up plants for miles so have the boys confined in a closed area with no fans.

Naa a 400 watt light wont hurt your plants even with the cfls.It could if you started close to new seedlings or clones though.But your fine at this stage

You are correct fletch I won't argue that, But I was only speaking about his current situation and stage of growth.

Here are some more pics after the first night. Still cant tell sex I don’t think but I included a shot of the stem of the tall, leggy plaint. If that is the way to tell I can get pics of the rest
