First Grow, Mostly Bagseeds, HID Closet Grow

Well here's my first grow, i was loaned a 400w MH light and some botanicare nutes from a friend who can't grow at the moment. So i did a bunch of homework and started gardening. All but 3 of these plants are bagseeds, some from dank buds others from mids. The other 3 are unknown but were obtained from a friend who said they were from an amsterdam bank, true or not here's my grow so far:

seedlings, 1 week (some were given to me and are ahead of the rest, they were transplanted, and are in shock for awhile)

coming into their own a little, at 2 weeks

the dank ones are supposed to be these three up front, in the clear cups. 3 weeks

'Dank' ones starting to come around finally! 4 weeks

The two growing in the same pot are dank seeds from some blueberry buds, rest are mids, 5 weeks

I know what your thinking, why hasn't he separated those two in the same pot! Well i finally did, and it was a @#$%^!! should have done it a long time ago, they are still recovering! 6 weeks

Distance shot of the new setup, 7 weeks, below is the same day

Well i finally transplanted them into 5 gals! They're mostly coming around nicely, and i've fimmed the ones that seem to be doing well. I did run out of soil and so the youngest plant is still in a cup (it is now level with the rest of the canopy)

the light is now exactly 2ft from the plants, and i haven't been having any more trouble maintaining temps and rH !! temp is 75-78*, humidity 40-55% Will probably set up some cfls for extra light, & to be used with flowering later.

At 7+ weeks they are starting to smell and so i'm turning my attention to odor control, which seems to be a problem because i don't have conventional ventilation. I just have a fan positioned by a crack in the door for the intake. The exhaust is the suspended fan blowing air towards the other half of the closet which in not used, yet.

(the doors to this closet are suspended on tracks from above and slide from side to side, the closet is 9ft x 3.5ft x 7.5ft)

here's what I'm thinking for a solution, i'll have a vertical board positioned in the doorway that's not used (against the wall) it will have two holes in it, top & bottom, one for intake other for exhaust. I'll install some 4in inline fans with some ducting and then try to make a carbon air scrubber inline w/exhaust. I will also make it light proof, although getting access to the garden after all this will be a challenge! This is kinda important as i don't know when/if the landlord will go down there without me being there!

I'm going to purchase a 600W digital HPS system to put on the other side of the current setup, and use that side for flowering the other for vegging (although i won't have anything vegging right away) splitting the two sides and maintaining light seals may prove to be more than i can handle, but only time will tell! I'm just kinda wingin it, i could really use some ideas about odor/ventilation/light leak control! the closet is all closed up, no where to run ducting..

I will be flowering in a few weeks, once the refund gets here to buy the light! This is what i have in mind for the hps: click here, whatcha think?

(wonder how much of this will change, seeing as how i can't update this page after, what, a day..)

thanks for stopping by, updates 5-10 days or upon request!

well to get some kind of exhaust going i decided to take out the small light fixture that was in the ceiling, it now leaves a 4 in hole where i can duct! problem is i really can't get it any bigger because it's agaist the wall and there would be a beam in the way if it was opened up anymore.

i also started construction on the flowering side of the closet, still needs light, ducting, inline fans, and a carbon filter.. c'mon refund check!!

plants are really stretching now that the light is 2' away! at 8 weeks now!

hey man hows it goin?

yes im in flats so cant vent into attic but there is a 6 inch gap between the door and the wall inside the closet so im going to cut a hole at the top of the closet and at the bottom for inlet and outlet, the wardrobe in the pics is going to have the back taken off it and the doors put back on and the inlet and outlet fans will be in there hiding them from plain view.

i am buying 2x 4in hydro fans next week one with carbon filter to mask outlet smell

will place outlet ducting round top of closet and then facing the tip of the bulb so to pull heat off the bulb lowering temps hopefully and bottom fan blowing fresh air up from under plants so they are getting good air circulation.

nice work on the grow man

Grow room not done yet, the MH/HPS sides aren't light sealed against each other and no ventilation ducting yet. My hps light is in the mail along with my stanley blower fan though :blsmoke:. I also went on a little shopping spree at home depo for ducting pieces, connectors, DIY carbon filter parts.. anyway..

I've been trying to work out venting/ducting issues and here's what i came up with, although it will go through some fine tuning before assemply:

My exhaust hole is in the ceiling though that removed light assembly and is only 4'', so my ducting will also be 4'' ::crossing fingers::
I'll try passive air intake for awhile (pictured) but i'll probably put a fan on it and duct to both sides. I'll probably end up venting vegging side to flowering side, we'll see. Oh and I'm going to seal the light so no stank gets blown straight out! I won't be using the vegging side for a few weeks, so i'm not concerned with it yet. I wish i would have worked all this out before hand instead of doing it by the seat of my pants.. :cuss:

EDIT: or maybe this instead.. (next post)

I was thinking of going with a T duck on the ceiling instead of Y so the carbon filter will be more inline..

hanging a little ducting today, pics later,

peace

You can see the AC inlet to the room. Also on both sides of the door are two air inlets for the grow box.

What I've done is attach a 4" dry hose to 50% of the air inlet by the AC vent.

The hose runs up to the 430 watt ballast. A 12 volt computer fan suck air thru the hose and blows on some louvers. The cold air blows thru the ballast. The ballast is always cool to the touch. The fan only runs when the lights are on.

This pic was take awhile ago before the Mylar. You can see the sound proof stuff (blue). But light can pass thru some. There is a better shot of the ballast set up.

Next is the coffee csn csrbon filter. It's attached to the sucktion side of the blower.

The outlet hose goes thru the roof and down the side.

It exhausts out the window.

fan to blow air under the light.

This is the grow box (flash on) .

This is the grow box (flash Off) .

May be this can help.

Hey SB99, Nice grow you've got going for yourself. I can't wait to see those babies flower, you have 2 very clearly different genotypes, one of which (long pointed fan leaves) looks Sativa dominant to me, you might get a nice mix of buds. Be keeping an eye out for preflowers and whack those males at first sight and you are cruising. Thought of doing a screen? It would certainly help your canopy maintain an even shape and light distribution would be more more even during flowering ... Suggest a suggestion, Happy Growing
