First grow, Veg stage yellowing

This is my first indoor grow and I just got it setup. I realize I am on a hard budget so the grow op might be considered a bit "ghetto" to some. What I have are Veg plants aprox 3 weeks old, but have only been in the bubbleponics system a week tops. The system has really spurted their growth buy seeing yellowing now.

BackGround on the set up

Im using a 15 gal Fish tank with an air pump to get oxygen. The plants are in fishtank rocks ( I realize not the best) with soil in bottom to provide nutrients. I have 5 decent looking plants, they are still fairly small for their age but 3 of them are yellowing pretty bad. Im thinking nitrogen def. or over watering? The plants are in cups with about 1 inch submerged in water. Im using 3 100 watt replacemnt CFL's for the grow Any ideas on whats going on? I will Post pictures Tonight please help!

impossible to help without pictures buddy, but nitrogen def could well be.

post pics and you will probably get answers from a few of the more pro's in here

Thank you guys for your reply, I am posting pictures to show you a little more detail. The plats are still pretty small for being 3 weeks old, but like i said they have only been in the tank a week. I post four pictures. The yellow is occuring on the bottom leaves and they are starting to curl up. Any ideas guys? I am also semi concerned that the plants are ALL only growing straight up, light hits them from every side, but they only grow up not out. Other pictures of similar ages veg seem to be much wider and more bushy if thats the word. What do you guys think?

What do you reccomend? I have taken the cups out of the water, With only 1/4 inch max of the cup submerged (thinking to correct if its over watered) but I havnt even used any chemicals, unless my soil is too high in nutrients. Im hoping to save these guys, You think add more soil less water or more water less soil? Any input helps!

i'm new to growing also but can you explain to me how that concept works? are you trying to do hydro with soil? i don't get it.

edit: i am in no way an expert on growing cannabis, i am probably more of a noob than you are but i think you will have better results if you just ditch the water in the tank and water every so often your plants need water (dry soil) keep in mind i may just not understand your grow method as i am a noobie as well

Im new as well This is my first hydro expirence. The way I take it is that plants don't need soil to grow, They only need a growing medium which I am using fishtank rocks. Because they are not "Growing" in the soil the plants need nutrients to survive. you can either go buy concentrated nutrients or soil already has nutrients in it. so I simply dissovle the soil into the water. Your right it does seem silly in a way but I did it so I wouldnt have to ever water them I just put them in the water and add air stones and dissolved soil to the water. Ive seen one grow which used both soil and DWC and worked very well. If this is wrong someone let me know. I just dont understand why the older plants are turning yellow and my 5 seedlings are growing amazing, way faster than in the window sill

UPDATE: After reading plant problems all night still cant figure it out. After one almost dead I noticed the leaves are quite dry, however the root system seems good, Im worried its rotting. ALSO the top few leaves of my most healthy plant have an orange rust color on them possibly. Im afraid this is a Nutrient def but I don't use any liquid nutes. Should I keep the cup touching the water or take it out? Please help before they diee!

may i ask what the ph is on your water\soil? abit early for nute def as they would have everything they need in the water alone for this stage..

our city water is like 6.8 so i decided to just roll with it. Is there anything that I can put in the water to lower it a bit besides chemicals? Like natural stuff? I also read it could be either nitrogen, light closeness or lack of fresh air, So im switching fro 24/0 to 18/6 and keeping the closet door open all day with the fan on. Hopefully tomorrow they will look a bit better. Craze do plants have everything they need for veg stage in just water alone? No soil at all or nutrients is needed untill later in the process?

just make sure they dont get light during dark period..

edit: you can put some egg scales in a bottle of water overnight. shake it now and then and then filter out the egg scales and use that water for the plants. will help if its ph issue most likely

Thanks crazzee, I pulled them out of as much water and gave them some darkness. I have a couple more days untill i need to change the water. How many shells do you think I need for 15 gals? Once I change the water I plan on simply using rain water i Figure its PH must be about perfect?

15 gallon.. about 60 liters or so.. quite a few hehethe times ive done it its only been with 10 liters and ive used maybe 5-6 shells... i dont know really.. no egg expert :p

concerning rainwater the ph in rainwater is not how it should be anymore sadly.
the pH of modern rainwater is between 5.5 and 6.0 because of carbon dioxide that's dissolved in the atmosphere so its not perfect.. for hydro maybe it is :)

Thanks again for your help, I just filled the 15 gal tank up 1/4th of the way, So id say about 15 leiters. I used around 8 eggs and boiled the city water first too. Just poured it all into the system so hopefully they start looking better. Do you know anything about bubbleponics or DWC? Im not quite sure how far in the water my pots should be. Roots are definatly getting bigger, But as of now they are about 1/8 inch submerged in the water. Ill keep you updated to see if the eggshell remedy worked.

I had the old tank and air stones from old fish and just decided to throw em in there. After all just Bagseed so there isnt much but time invested in it. If these babies dont survive im going to take the ol' soil route myself. How often would you suggest I water and keep lights on for my seedlings that are about 4 or 5 days old if I transplant em in dirt?

you would want to veg them for four weeks. (MH) blue light 18on-6off. then flower them for around eight weeks.(HPS) orange light 12-12.

for teen-adult plants i water every other day with about 0.5-1L but offcourse it all depends on water retention ability of your soil.
my mix is roughly 20% perlite, 10% leca, 20% cow shit and 50% potting soil.
also temperature in growroom plays a part. the hotter it is the faster moisture dissapear.

for seedlings its more of a touch and feel... evenly moist. not waterlogged.

i love growing in dirt and will allways grow in dirt. hydro is more effective but dirt is better meditation for me :) mixing the nutes. adding the water by hand.. its just nice you know :)

ill never get a machine that bzzzzzt.. todays work done.. its a hobby of mine and i wont get a machine that does my hobby for me hehe
