First Indoor Setup - Scrog Soil Grow

Hey everyone,

I've been out of the game quite a few years, but after recently buying my own condo I have decided to jump back into growing. I've always done outdoor grows, mostly guerrilla grows using pulley systems in the trees, floating them in swamps, etc. Now I'm just looking to build an indoor setup for 1 plant just for myself. I haven't ever grown indoors, but am very excited to start. It all stemmed from my buddy offering me a clone or two of his personal hybrid strain he's been growing for 20 some-odd years. I said hell yea, so he just said to let him know when I'm all set up for it. I'm going to be doing the grow in my basement, which is usually 65-70* F. I have neighbors on both sides, so sound and odor are a definite factor. Mostly odor, as I'm usually down there mixing or building anyways. I have been doing a bunch of research off and on for a while now, but please bear with me as it's still all somewhat confusing. Thinking of doing this grow with soil, as I know soil a bit better. As time goes on I may get into hydro. Here is what I am thinking:

-Box:
I'd like to build a box that measures 28" x 36" x ~60"

-Reflector:
Super Sun 2 6" Air Cooled Reflector

-Ballast:
Digital Lumatek 400w

-Bulbs:
Optilume MH 400w
Ushio HPS 400w

-Air extraction

+Fan Selection:
Soler and Palau TD-150s Inline Mixed Flow Fan
or
Can max fan 6”Inline Mixed Flow Fan

+Carbon Filter Selection:
Can Filter 9000
or
Can-lite 6" filter (Can-lite 100)

-Air intake
Booster fan 4” (~180 cfm)
Small 6" fan inside for circulation

-Medium
Fox Farms Little Warrior for clone
Fox Farms ocean forest for veg

-Scrog
28" x 36" @ ~16" high (probably will use chicken wire)

I am only going to be running 1 plant so I will be doing the Veg/Flowering in the same box.

My questions are:
1. Is the lighting setup overkill for 1 plant? Should I go to 250W?
2. Do you think heat will be a problem with the lighting setup (At 400w mh/hps)?
3. Is the air filtration setup overkill? I want to make sure there is no odor, but don't want to overspend. (Keep in mind it will only be for 1 plant)
4. Any recommendations for better equipment for the cost? Trying to keep costs as low as I can atleast as I'm starting out. (Dont really have a budget but as it is it's looking like ~$6-700
5. Anything I'm missing?
6. General comments or recommendations?

Thank you all! I appreciate any help or advice. I'll keep researching and learning in the meantime!

sounds good to me. for veg and flower you should use a 2:1 mix of ocean forest to light warrior.

and a few recommendations for better equipment.

i use both of these and they work great and are fairly inexpensive. :bigjoint:

Thanks for the recommendations ROFLhacks. I'll try those out, and thanks for the tip on the soil!

I have another question to add to this. For ventilation, should it be set up in this order: (inside of grow box) carbon filter > ducting > air cooled reflector > ducting > 6" inline fan pulling air out of the box? Then the smaller 4" booster fan pulling air from outside the box in? I have heard that it's better to pull air than push air, which is why I'm thinking the 6" inline fan should be at the end of the chain, pulling the air out of the box. Then the smaller fan helping the system pull more air in from outside.

Thanks!

Yup you got it right. Filter>Light>Fan. but if you can try to get fresh air from outside.

and also you cant have more air coming in then going out

Hey, I would suggest 2 seperate air systems. carbon sscrubber > Fan >outside....i would use the stuff the ROFL suggested earlier.
second system is for the light itself, you pull air from outside through the light, then back outside so it never gets the smell of pot because it is all fresh air. http://htgsupply.com/Product-6in-Inline-Duct-Fan.asp I just plug this one into my light timers so its on when the light is on.
With this, you need passive air intake at the bottom.

When i went to this method, it was actually quieter. I think the reduced stress on the fans will help their longevity too. fingers crossed on that one

And with that much air circulation, a 400 or even 600 would not be a problem if surrounding temps where reasonable.

That makes sense, thanks past times!

Just to confirm, to keep negative pressure, the passive air intake should be smaller w/ a smaller fan than the exhaust, correct? Such as a 4" booster fan with ~180 cfm? Should I draw the passive intake air from outside of the house? Should I pull the air intake for the lights from outside the house? It get's pretty cold here in the winter, so not sure if it's a good idea as the temps vary a good amount sometimes. (50*F - 10*F)

So ventilation should run like this:
-Scrubber > Fan > Outside
-Intake for light > light > duct fan (past times posted) > outside
-Smaller intake fan

where are you going to keep the room? Passive intake means you allow the air to flow in based on need (Need created by your outtake fan in the carbon scrubber system)...If that makes sense

I just have a vent set up for my passive intake.

As far the air through the bulb, i just meant air from outside the grow room. Not necessarity from outside. If it gets that cold, you shouldn't use that air. The severe difference in temps could damage the bulb.

Dont use chicken wire for the screen. It will be a PITA come harvest. I would suggest using a string, that way you can cut it at harvest and pull through the buds that grow around it and not ruin them.
