First time brownies (oil) ...what went wrong?

Whats up guys, new poster looking for any advice from some edible gurus.. First time trying to make these myself and first time eating..... and the results were not what I hoped they would be. I've read at least 30-40 different recipes, articles and guides on how to get the best results... and obviously there is no standard....but idk. my stove is very uneven and inconsistent so i decided to do the crock pot / slow cooker way with oil which SEEMED the safest. every guide said practically any slow cooker would work and to just leave it on low for anywhere between 30 minutes to 24 hours.... so this is what i did :

-went to walmart bought a small 2 qt slow cooker.

-used a half oz of pretty green mids. (actually it was like 15 grams)

-recipe for the brownies called for 3/4 cup oil. I went to the store and bought coconut oil since i heard it absorbed the best. I put about 1 cup of oil in the slow cooker on low, let it get warmed up. wanted to put in a bit more than what the recipe called for, cuz evaporation and stuff.

-after about 10 minutes or so, i put the half oz in the coconut oil, stirred it so it was even.

-i let the crock pot stay on for about 2.5 to 3 hours. the consensus of the guides was about 3 hours. stirring every 10 minutes or so which i did. This was when the entire house started smelling horrid. I heard/knew it would, but it was worse than i thought. like burning pine tree... but more earthy. hard to describe.

-after about 3 hours, i let the oil sit for 20 minutes or so to cool and then i poured the oil into a cup with a very fine gold coffee strainer. got pretty much every drop out. The buds themselves were a darkish brown color. similar to cig tobacco. The oil was a VERY dark green. like an earthy dark green with a black tint. This was the first thing that concerned me thinking i might have burned it, since in most of the pictures i saw it came out like a very dark gold brown color. but i figured maybe it was just because it was coconut oil and those were canola/veg oils

-made the brownie mix, put it in the pan and then the oven. the smell seemed to be gone. We cooked em at 325 instead of 350 because of a bunch of stuff i read that said the thc would get messed up at that temp and 325 was best. i thought it was bs, but no biggie, not a huge difference. When the brownies were finished and we opened to oven, they smelled pretty bad. there was a hint of brownie behind the nasty earthy smell.

-we cut them and let them get cool. the Gf actually 'cut them' into 12s... but I wanted to cut then into more than 12 thinking they might be too strong. So we have pieces that are anywhere between 1x2" pieces to big 2x3" pieces.

Night 1 ... Now is when it kinda got weird. I'm a big dude and my metabolism is probably horrid... but just going by what everything I've read had said, it should be like 1 to 2 hours for it to kick in..right? I ate a corner piece. just one. was probably like a 2x2 square....and it was one of the nastiest things i've ever eaten....it tasted almost nothing like a brownie, and tasted just like the smell.... it was hard to muscle down...... I ate it at 11:45 pm.... waited an hour.... 12:45am... nothing.... around 1:45am I started feeling a tiny bit of i guess what you could call a buzz?.... but it could have been just in my head ...it was so minor. finally 4 hours had gone by it was 4 in the morning. i got bored of waiting and practically fell asleep on myself..... woke up the next morning with a bit of an after high and a migraine.

Night 2....last night... I figure it's do or die at this point, because i'm already upset at the taste and how they did nothing for me. Each brownie was individually wrapped and put in a container in the fridge... now they were all a bit tougher as they cooled. around 6:30 pm i decided to give it a go... I hadn't eaten anything all day so this would be the first thing. I found the biggest one i could find... was about a 3x2" and ate it. also took half of a smaller one and ate it. so in total one big one, and half of a smaller one..... around 8:30p it felt like it had hit me. I was gaming with my gf and a friend of mine and I was definitely zoning out.. At that point I knew i was feeling it. finally around like 9:30 or 10 i was munchin hard core. But I was still a bit disappointed, it wasn't the impact I was hoping it would be. It honestly just felt like I had smoked a couple bowls and was just chilling. All the stories i've read made them seem like something a lot crazier. I even took a few tokes of the bong just to round it out before i went to bed. I guess I wanted to trip balls and just got a pretty chill seemingly-regular high.

So.. tonight... I was thinking about giving it another go.... my next step would be to eat 2 of the bigger ones tonight and see what happens (ew). my gf wont even try them because of the smell/taste. can anyone offer me any advice on any of this? should I try eating 2? where did the cooking go wrong? did I burn it? Not cook it long enough? too long? Who knows. I'd appreciate any input :bigjoint:

I've read that one atleast a dozen times, doesn't help me too much at this point lol

Although it's good to point out that in the oil picture on that site, it kind of shows what i was talking about

Im assuming that is veggie or canola oil or something, doesnt seem like coconut. and my 'after' picture didnt really have a gold tint like that. was more green/earthy. and darker.

Should taken pictures :(

I used the recipe below for cannabutter -- I like the butter taste better than oil, and this recipe has been no fail (for me, at least). I use a regular cheapie brownie mix from the store, and it only requires 1/3 cup of oil (melted cannabutter). I use 1 gallon sized ziploc bag stuffed full of trim/popcorn buds (about an ounce, I guess). I never use nice buds for brownies. I've noticed that for heavy smokers, they don't get *too* much of a high from a brownie, sometimes nothing for several hours. For lightweights, it's almost psychedelic, lasting 5 hours or more! (that's me!)

It sounds like you omitted the water in your crockpot? Cooking your bud in only oil for several hours would probably burn it. No wonder it tastes like burnt pine needles! You could try to salvage those burnt bud brownies by making a brownie icecream sundae -- swamping the burned taste with fudge sauce, whipped cream, (bacon?) to make it more palatable.

My condolences, Deca. Give this recipe a try:

Thanks for the reply. Yeah.. no water was added. I dont remember reading anything about adding water? :l. How much should I be adding? I could try the butter recipe at some point. I actually just got a new range so maybe I can try actually doing it in a pan Instead of a slowcooker. Last night I was coasting around a 6 or 7 after eating two of them. So they work, they just arent that strong since I guess some of the thc burned away. Im considering just trying firecrackers for now since they seem easier.

I used the butter receipe on my trim last year and made brownies with some and froze the rest. I'm a big guy but i guess some what of a light weight and 1 brownie hits me fairly hard. I'd try the butter receipe in the crock pot. the temp on a crock is more even than stove top. oh and the frozen butter has maintain it potence. Just my .02 worth

I have the Magical Butter Machine. My first go around using butter didn't work out so well. The brownies were very weak. Dud more research and realized I should add soy lecithin and use coconut oil instead of butter. That shit came out great using the Duncan Hines brownie mix that calls for 3/4 cups oil. As a side note, I also added a couple tablespoons of soy lecithin to the brownie mix. Anyway that shit worked out awesome! Better than Amsterdam cakes. So I decided to rerun my butter again with soy and a little more bud. That shit worked out awesome too! The soy was the key and also I started cooking my brownies at 250 degrees. Takes a hell of a lot longer but I get better results.

I just add the butter first, the trim, then top off the crockpot to about 3 or 4 inches below the rim, and I cook on low for 24 hours. Some folks don't cook it that long, but I follow that recipe, and it's been no fail. I stir occasionally, and I top off the water again before I go to bed.

I've done the pan on the stove method, and I ALWAYS have an issue with uneven heat, forgetting to stir it, and then burning it. I like the fix it and forget it method. If I'm using a shit ton of weed, either trim or bud, I can't afford to have my ADHD kick in, and forget what I've got going on the stove.

Glad you finally had enough brownies to feel "something". I guess you eat 4 of them tonight for better effect!

How much herb did you use? I have the Mb machine too. It hasn't worked. I bought the soy lecithin and put it in the oil and butter. very weak results. I didn't think about putting the soy Lecithin in the brownies. That could've worked!
