first time grower looking for some info

Trying to start my first grow at some point and autos seem like the way I want to go. However I have been trying to do some research with very confusing results.... my goal is to have like 4 or so plants with a dry weight of about 14-20 grams per plant. Preferably smaller plants, in the 20" range at Max. Is that a reasonable dry weight for that small of a plant? Are the crazy chemical additives needed for autos? I read that some say the potency is there for autos, others say that they're not up to par with photos yet... are they comparable in potency? Are they stable? Or are there very many good batches as well as bad grows? Been trying to answer these questions but not very much in depth info was achievable. I personally prefer the couch lock type buzz for pain as well as sleeping issues. Are autos for me? Or not really?

been growing autos awhile..very easy to grow.something small and strong would be mossys jems--at 9 to 14 inches or so.i have grown 20 at a time in a 2x4 area--anywhere from 12 to 40 grams a plant--usually 12 to 20 grams per.i have grown out 12 strains with another 4 strains going now---i only use promix---5-1-1 after 10 days and dloombuster from lowes to bud them out--cheap and easy

Autos work fine but go with what you want and just bend it and throw into flower when you are ready. That is my plan this time, I am going to start to bend them soon and when they are about basketball size I will throw them into 12/12.
By bending them I will have a few, if not several, growing straight up, like an lst.

Goal is inside, under cfls, in soil. Promix easy to find? Are there different varieties within the brand? Shooting to keep it around 2x3. I'm seeing a lot of seeds saying bud is like 8-15%, is that worthy of couch lock effect? Particular background I should be looking for as far as strain to get this effect? Was planning on just 24/0 them, is 12/12 better?

If you have a hydro or gardening store in your area, check it out. they'll most likely have everything you need. Fox Farms Ocean Forest is also another good soil medium.
Autos, just like photos, can turn out great. But also have the possibility of going bad. It all depends on your marijuana cultivating skills. Don't overthink it. It's a weed after all. Just wants to grow :D

True. But I don't think I could handle photos and I don't want to toss a ton of cash out then just get wrecked with useless plants lol. Oh and another question I had was are all autos female? Trying to figure out how many seeds I would need. Males and hermies possible? If so how likely? Ugh. I think I'm thinking this out to hard lol....

Well autos typically cost more than feminized Photos. I'd peruse some seed bank sites and see what they have for femmed autos and go from there. You will drive yourself crazy overthinking it. Just get the seeds and get to growing. You will figure it out along the way. Maybe practice on some bagseeds while you are waiting on your beans to arrive that you order.

Well I already have been searching around and I am set that I will be purchasing from attitude, I just don't want to spend 200$ in seeds and fail horribly, but I don't want to spend 100$ and not get enough seeds to actually grow and then end up with only one or two plants

Good choice. Attitude is very reliable. I am on my first grow, so I have been exactly where you are right now. I bought a 5-pack of Barneys Farm Femmed Amnesia Lemon. When you spend about $50 with them, they throw in some freebies. If I were you, I would research some of the different breeders (G13 labs, Dinafem, Delicious Seeds, Barneys Farm etc etc) and find a strain that is easy to grow. People around here are hard on Barneys Farm for example, but I am having pretty decent success. I got 2 freebies with my order....La Musa, an Auto from Delicious Seeds and Madness by World of Seeds. All are femmed but only La Musa is an auto. The only difference for me has been the speed in which she has flowered and when I will be able to harvest.

My point is that you don't necessarily have to buy an auto to get your money's worth, just make sure you get something that has been feminized. Having said that, based on my research, an Auto strain would meet your other requirements of having a smaller sized plant, but even then check out the strain. My La Musa is a monster at almost 3 & 1/2 feet tall. Of course, you can manipulate that a bit with a photo plant by flipping the lights to 12/12 early. I'd place a modest sized order to begin with. You can always order more seeds later.

Well short stuff blue Himalaya diesel caught my eye and looks very pretty. $100 for ten fem. Seems legit to me. Breeders site says 12-30 inches which is definitely do able and says that it gives the couchlock high I'm looking for. If I purchased 10 seeds, what should I expect to actually grow out? 7-8? Appears that it would be a nice first purchase and grow, any opinions for/against it?

I just finished harvesting three Afgan Kush Ryder plants and if you want couch lock high then this is for you. Finished in 71 days from seed to harvest yielding aprox 4oz dry. IMO can't go wrong with those autos.

Even feminized seeds can become hermies, just gotta have a watchful eye on all your plants. if even one goes hermie, it could pollinate any/all females you have. pick 'n' mix is cheaper, but they are regular seeds, so you may end up with males. (but if you get into breeding, it's not such a bad thing!)

Maybe I have gotten lucky, but frankly I would expect 10 of 10 to perform. I think worst case is 8. $10 per seed sounds like a pretty decent deal and about what I paid for mine and remember that you will get some freebies thrown in to the mix as well. As knowmad points out just above this post, even fems and autos can hermie, so you need to watch your plants carefully. There is a thread by 808killahz re: La Diva and he has one plant that went herm on him, but he just plucked any potential pollen sacks off the plant and so far it looks good.

Make your purchase and get going. Understand that you will make some mistakes along the way, but the key is learning from them and making improvements as you go. I wish you the best of luck.

I am using an 250w HPS for 4 plants. CFLs would be cheaper than an HPS and won't cause the heat issues, but I've never grown with them. There is a whole forum of folks here at RIU that swear by them and I plan to incorporate CFLs into my next grow. I may even veg completely with CFLs but I have a long way to go before I am there.
