First time grower

I will be attempting my first ever bud grow. I'm 55 with many medical problems that Marijuana elevates, and tired of synthetic drugs that hurt me more than help. I've been researching for days on the net about the process. Looking for ad vice on a good book reference for first time growers. Your inputs would be greatly appreciated. Friends to talk to would be also greatly appreciated. Thanks and peace to all.

Books and/or movies are good. I started out with YouTube growing movies. I don't got any books. All my knowledge is based on experience and watching videos and of course.. Rollitup..


a lot of friendly folk around here both young like myself and old like you hopefully you'll have a good time.

The indoor/outdoor medical growers bible by Jorge Cervantes is a must have in my opinion. Great book filled with info and like a 1000 sum color photos. I'd be more than happy to answer some questions you may have. By the way welcome to riu and happy growing.

Thanx I want to build a grow cabinet about 3ft depth 4 ft wide and 7ft tall

Nice!! pretty much same size as my Closet Grow...You could go for either 250w Mh/Hps OR 400w Mh/Hps IMO..others may say different...each to their own..Me in the Space I've got I am running a 250w Mh/Hps kit(Cheapo) but in the NewYear will be upgrading this to a 600w Mh/Hps kit(Though I do have a Fan/Filter capable of shifting 550cfm) or something like that(Lol..Stoned) as long as you got Air replacment/circulation and temps under control I think you would be fine with 250-400w Mh/Hps Setup.

I would build a 4x4 in there with a 600 or 1k hps if you can control heat. Might aswell spend the money to do what you want, instead of cutting corners and end up spending more in the end

Hiya fir3dragon, not quite sure how'd you would get a 4x4 into a 3x4x7?? Lol sounds like a Tardis! on a similar note..just been thinking about my Closet Grow..Kinda got outta hand..so going to Adapt 1 of my rooms to finish em(well they got another 6wks to go yet) so my babies new home will be 9' x 7' x 8' painted Matt White over the next couple of days..will get 600w Hps next wk.

Howd ya get that weed to look like bamboo? Theres no side branching and the branches are so far apart. Ive never seen that. High temps? Over crowded tent?

to the op.
if you want to grow some herb order seeds online now, by the time they get here youll be smart enough to have success if you read up on a couple of topics and decide what options are best for you. If you have no access to clones i would order around five feminized seeds. That way your gaurenteed females and you can germinate a couple all or one at a time.
Then you have to decide how much weed you need. If its just a personal thing you could probably get by with running a tent with a 400 watt hps light in it. If you smoke a ton you may want a 600 watt, and if you plan on hookin up a couple of friends then go with a 1000 watt. If you really want a seperate light for veging the plants to the size where you want to induce flowering i like t5 flourecent tubes. Somthing with at least 4-6 bulbs and four feet long.
Read up on this stuff
germination
how to water and not drown your plants
how to not kill your plants by over fertilizing them
how much a plant grows after you induce flowering
how to not cut your plant down early cause you didnt look at the tricombs and now why does it tast like grass clippings
hanging and drying the cut plant
jaring and curing

thats seven things to read all about. If you can get a good grasp of those things youll be fine, well youll still probly screw things up but hopefully not so bad. The only thing i left out is room design but thats kinda up to the space you have. Some grow in a computer case and some in the warehouse building on 5th and park ave so thats kinda up to what you want to fandangle. Good luck. Hiya AlienWidow, what happened was...I had a Visit from Landlord(about month ago) had to hide everything..and in the process adapt this cupboard/Closet...then had to swap bulbs went from 200w CFL to 250w Hps and because Closet wasn't Light proofed at the time couldn't Flip to 12/12 till I had sorted light leaks...which with my Budget meant waiting like 2 extra wks..and by this point they had gone past the height I wanted to flower at. Only thing I can think is they liked? the change from CFL to Hps? also I repotted just before flowering into some 11-15Ltr(can't remember) Air-Pots...Tis crowded in Closet now..but by Wed-Thurs Ladies new home will be ready_ L9' x W7' x H8' with 600w Hps...keep thinking maybe having them in a circle due to the extra space? then running the 600w in reflector above the ladies..say about 7"(I Air cool Bulb) and Also having either my 250w Hps or 200w Giant CFL hanging Vertical in the middle for added Mid-High Lumen penetration.

The Clones from this batch of ladies will be put into 12/12 at the right time(well before they turn into Palm Trees)

i learned a lot from ed rosenthal's book. and i referred to my botony book from college quite a bit. "introduction to Botony", Berg. and i watch youtube vids a lot also cuz they are free and provide instant gratification. i stay away from any book that has "bible" in its title because it tends to be more of a marketing ploy than anything else.
