First Time Growing... Few Questions

Hello rollitup community!

I am officially starting my first grow and so decided to join here since it offers a lot of information. I know you all most likely recommend that i buy seeds rather than use the ones from a bag I got but I heard somewhere that I can receive a fine for that so I shouldn't have it shipped to my house. I live in New York...Is this accurate?

So I have a few questions about growing hopefully someone here could help me out.

First, I have read a few different ways to germinate the seed. The wet paper towel, warm dark place; The shot glass of water, put the seed in and cover it, warm dark place, wait til it sinks.

My question is this: What is the best method? and approximately how long would it take for it to sprout?

Second, I have also read a lot of different ways and depths to plant the seed initially. What are your guys' preferences?

:blsmoke: Thanks :blsmoke:

On here you will get all kind of answers... there is no "best" way to do it... Here's how I do it.

I soak them in a shot glass for like 24 hours... they should have sunk by then or be sinking when you stir the water a little.

then the paper towel method until they sprout for 1/4"-1/2". Takes one to three days usually...

I then put it in grow medium, fingernail deep and cover it. I keep mines under a dome with cfl lights for 18 hours a day and they come out and form a plant within a week.

Hope this helps

I do almost the same thing. I put them in water till they sink when you poke em, then in between two plates in wet paper towels and placed by my heater. They usually pop within 24 hours, then I put my soil in solo cups with holes on the bottom (use a lighter to make then, works crazy good). I use FoxFarm soil and find that the ferts can be a little hot for seedlings so I flush the soil in the cup with about a liter of water, then plant the seedling about 1/4" deep.

I keep them in a humidity dome on a cookie rack and fill the bottom of the dome with water to keep the himidity up.

I've have a 100% germ rate on my last two grows (about 15 seeds)

Personally I use just the paper towel method alone and sometime I just put the seed in my soil about 1/4-1/2 inch down. Both have worked 100% for me with decent seeds. No there is no 'penalty' for ordering seeds in NY. Worst thing that can happen is they get stopped in customs and you get a letter telling you that. I do suggest however, not having them sent to where you plan on growing. Spend a few bucks and get a P.O. Box. The germinated seed should be placed with the tap root down. Make sure to wash your hands and/or put gloves on when handling the seeds. Sometimes the oil from your skin can cause problems. However, I have never had any issues. The best suggestion I can offer is to read, study, plan, and act before beginning. Click the link in my signature. The thread contains many instructional videos from master growers for first timers. Welcome aboard, and best of luck!
