First Time Hydro w/ Bagseed

Hello all I am another newbie. I have tried growing before and had a few decent plants with a setup kinda what I'm working with now. My MH light that I had at the time went out like 3 weeks before the plants were done. It looked & smelled like some good bud & it had a few seeds in it so I saved a few. I also had a few seeds from other good bud that I've had. So that brings me to where I am now. I wasn't gonna go thru with it, cuz I put like 20 seeds in a paper towel to germ. and for the first week I didn't have any luck. Finally 4 cracked & gave me a little hope. Take in consideration these seeds have been in a container for the past 2-3 years, so they might take a little longer to get going. They have been buried for 2 days now and still no sign of life, but I have faith that they will pop up.

Now to my setup, I don't have any pics as of yet, but as they grow I will post some. I have a 5 gallon water tub, low profiled one w/ a 2x4 cut to fit across it long way, 2 small strips of white paneling w/ 3 holes in each, 6 small pots filled 50/50 Perlite & Vermiculite. I have a half of a napkin in the bottom of each w/ a 2 pieces of nylon rope going thru the holes in the bottom that feeds out of the reservoir, & a small 10-20 gallon air pump for fish tanks w/ 12 in airstone. White paneling around the walls w/ 400 Watt MH hanging above it. I know I should probably start with flou. tubes, but dont have any, so for now I'll just hang it higher and wait to see what happens. And also have a small fan blowing air exchange in there. I will post pics shortly, so you have a better idea. It's nothing fancy, but it's worth a shot I guess. And if all goes well maybe I'll exchange the bagseeds for some Dank Seeds. I would like to try to keep these plants short and stocky, but not knowing the strain or genetics I may have some issues. I'll keep posted.

An update. It's 2 days later and I still do not see anything breaking the surface on any of the pots. I dug around a little and found the seed it looks like the taproot has grown a little but nothing major, I'm thinking it should break surface in the next day or so. I think it may be going slowly due to being older seeds. Anyone have any input on this? I'm gonna wait and see what happens, but in the mean time I ordered some White Widow & Aurora Indica seeds from from WF. Hopefully they will be here within a couple weeks. I didn't put a return address on the outside, maybe I should have so it isn't intercepted for suspicion. I would like to try them together and use the same nutrients and at the same time keep them small & compact w/ thick buds. I hear the smell of both are really strong during flowering, much less together. I will post some pictures as soon as I see growth.

Feel free to post comments or opinions.

I don't know of anyone starting with a 400w. Buy one tiny cfl for $13 and put it right on top of the seeds. 1" or less.

also, don't bury the seeds very deep. perhaps the depth of the actual seed itself.

I'm not a great soil person, but hopefully this bump will attract someone elses attention.

Well i dont know if its soil. 50/50 perlite/vermiculite. I have the light 30 inches above them so it shouldnt be too much, but I was looking at cfl's & flo tubes. May go that route. But I have planted in cups and other things before and at least had them pop up. I think i'm gonna just leave them alone for a couple days and see if anything happens. not really gonna get my hopes up too much on them and just wait for my other seeds to come in. Good things come to those who wait. I'm ready to try AI anyways. It looks like some good Dank.

also, my experience with seed sprouting, regardless of medium, has been that about only 1 in 6 bag seeds will sprout. and that's with them being fairly recent. I don't have any old bagseed.

Yea I'm waiting for my AI & WW to get here. I checked the status of my order & payment is yet to be received but it's only been 4 days. I think my problem with sprouting is old seeds and the fact that I didnt have any heat going at night and with no light I would get up in the morning and the temp would be like 50. But I planted a few more bagseeds just to see & I have a little action under the surface hopefully she will stick her head out in a day or so. Have you ever had any exp. with AI or WW? I'll post pics as soon as I see a sprout.

Okay I have one that kinda broke surface but still hasnt opened up yet. Going slower to me than i think it should. I have a question for anyone. My temp with light on and I raised it close to 35 in above pots w/small fan above blowing down & it still gets close to 90. Any suggestions on how to lower temp without changing lights? I thought about maybe spraying the walls with a spray bottle maybe it will give it a little more moisture and hopefully drop temps. I dont know what the humidity is.

I got my temp down to around 82-84 I figure that should be fine. I have another seed that is starting to take root so it should pop up in a day or so. The one that surfaced first still hasn't grown much it just straitened up a little but hasn't split yet. Should I be adding nutes yet? I have been mixing water with a little bit of root starter by Schultz & letting it sit for a day. I didn't know if maybe a little N would help it to grow some.
Feel free to comment.

wait with the nutes at leased until the a 2 weeks old and show some sets of leaves. you really can kill with nutes put in to early. also the first nutes should be in a damn weak solution to prevent shock to the plants. the first inches can be painfully slow, but that is good this way. keep the light close by to prevent stretching of the plants!

Well the only one that was sprouted still hasn't grown any, so I pulled it up. It looked half dead and when it came up it didn't even have any root. So I replaced it with another seed that is cracking but still has no taproot. So in about 2-3 days i should have another sprout. I hope these that pop-up are better thank the last. WF still hasnt received my payment. I sent it out a week ago from today, so maybe they should get it in the next day or so. Once I get those seeds I'm hoping to kick things off. I'd like to have 8 plants 3 Aurora Indica, 3 White Widow, & 2 Bagseed I'm hoping to keep them small & compact but solid. Hopefully out of 8 I will have 5-6 females with any luck. Damn time goes by slow when you're waiting on things. I tried to take a pic of the so called plant that sprouted, but it was way too small my camera couldn't even find it. I'll report as soon as there is change.

Still no changes other than my temps. I thought I had then controlled in the low-mid 80s. The temp in the house is avg. 65. The avg. temp in GR is 84-90. I have a small fan above them, it has two speeds. I have it on high blowing constantly under my 400 MH and it just doesn't seem to be doing the trick. Its in a closet so I cant do to much as far as construction and cutting holes in the walls. I also have a plastic cup with water in it for moisture. Anyone have any ideas on how to get it to the mid-upper 70s or even low 80s?

I was wondering and reading around a bit. I have a 4 x 2 x 3-5ft high closet with a 400 MH w/ batwing reflector, but there is no place for an exhaust. Would it be worth my time to make another housing for the light out of sheet metal with an exhaust fan and some small duct coming off of my light? Would it lower temps enough to be worth the time? Also I dont have anywhere I could exhaust it to other than back into the bedroom. Would that be fine? And would that do anything about the smell once they start flowering? Or would it just allow the smell to leak into the room? I'm not worried about smell right now because nothing has sprouted but I will be soon. I would like to get this all up and going before my seeds get here. I cant mess things up to bad I will have to fix whatever holes I put in the walls.
Any feedback would be nice.

sure, air-cooled light is always a damn good thing to have since you can move them right on top of the plants without burning them:) you should have some air exchange in your grow so fresh co2 comes in and humidity can get out so you won't get mold in there. the temperature should be fine if you move it down to the mid 70's since target temp is mostly around 78F.
for the smell you have to do something, it will start already before you start flowering them, my big bud started to stink after 2 weeks like hack, good crop:). get a carbon filter for that job, it will lower it to extend that not much to smell is left.

WOO HOO!! Finally my money made it to WF they sent me confirmation saying they will ship out today. It took exactly one week to get there so I'm hoping roughly a week to get back to me. I was beginning to wonder because I didn't put a return address on the outside and heard somewhere that it may get intercepted due to suspicion. I'm excited and ready to get going, hopefully my setup will work fine. I'm afraid that I will need bigger pots, but I've used this size once before and they did fine as far as remember considering that I only want them to be roughly 2 1/2 - 3 ft tall.

Hey Green I am still considering that air cooled hood, but would a bigger fan like maybe a 10-12 in solve my problem. I have a small 8 in fan now not sure of the CFM. And do you think 400W is enough for 24 sq ft?

piThis is my setup. I'm going to have 3 Aurora Indica, 3 WW, & 2 Bagseed plants, 8 total. Still waiting on seed to come in. The 6 pots are hopefully gonna be hydro and in the other I have MG Soil that I mixed more perlite in with & I'm hoping I can get 2 plants to grow without becoming rootbound, thats another reason why I am gonna try to keep em small and compact. I was thinking 1 AI & 1 WW or 2 of one. My small fan on the left side, I dont know if it needs to be moved or what but no matter where I have put it I havent been able to drop temps. It took me for ever to get these pics on here & I still dont think I did it right. I'll post more pics in a day or so when I have sprouts.

So if anyone has any input on my setup or my pics feel free to comment

This is a pic of one of my two sprouts that popped up this morning. I forogt I put a seed in this pot. I had another one pop up too that I had been checking under the surface to check its progress, but it didnt sprout the same as this one did. So my conclusion to myself and other NooBs, once it has germinated & been planted leave it alone cuz it could affect the growth process. I still havent received my others yet so Im hoping these dont get too far ahead of the new ones, if so I will have to top or tie back somehow. Could anyone tell me how to post pics so they pop up on the screen as thumbs?

Still first day of sprouting. Both plants are green and looking good as of now. They are not stretching yet so Im guessing I have the light close enough without burning them. Using regular tap water to water with, after letting it sit 24 hours. Watering 2 times a day for now til the roots form and start feeding themselves thru the nylon rope that rest in the res. The perlite & Verm. dries somewhat quick under the light. Will start adding a little Nitrogen soon. More update & maybe a pic if they grow any overnight.

Day 4 of life
It is day 4 since the 2 BS have sprouted. I am just starting to see the second set of leaves (1st real set). My inner leaves are a little lighter color than the outer. I dont know if its water or nute problem. They are looking good though, so far they have stayed short. I'm still waiting for my pinto beans. I still dont have my intake & exhaust going. Temps have been staying kinda warm 82-93 was a high but avg 86 with humidity avg. 34 RH. I was wondering if I made one of those carbon filter deals with a 80 CFM computer fan and had it exhausting the light back up into the top of the closet would that work for heat and smell or would that just build up more heat? I tried bringing intake from under the house but there was insulation under and it brought in hot air. Or I could make a hole in the wall and place a small fan for intake, but will exhaust going back into the top of closet work? As of now I have to keep closet door open, but need to fix so I can shut and keep cool. Feel free to comment anyone.

This is an update they are 1 week old today. I dont have a ph tester, so I think that may be some of my problem. Temp has averaged 82-87 on, but has been up to 96 & low of 65 at night w/ fan on. Humidity avg. is 34 day & gets up in the 40s at night. Still dont have adequate intake or exhaust setup, it's coming soon. If anyone can tell me how to post pics on here as thumbnails please do tell. So how do these look for one week old. I know the pics arent the best or clearest.

1 Week Old... Light colored w/minor burns on tips. Really short w/stocky stem for one week old.

1 Week Old...good coloring, has a couple brown spots, but looks good

It is day 9 since they sprouted. They still haven't grown much. The bigger one has droopy leaves. I thought it was overwatering, but its perlite there is hardly any water that is gonna stay in the pot. I was watering 2 times a day now I've cut it back to 1 time a day. Still no perk up. And the other one is still really short, light colored, & deformed looking. The pics above are basically what they look like now maybe a tad bigger, but the leaves are a little more droopy. Ive kinda added a cardboard ceiling half way across my closet and made a half ass exhaust for now. I'm gonna change it around a bit when I see some growing being done. But it seems to helps quite a bit now my temp stays around 76-84F & around 37-42% RH. But it's also cooler outside so I dont know if its because of that or what I did. I notice my light ballast stays alot cooler though. Anyone have any input?
