First time with small pots...any pointers?

Ive chosen smaller pots this time round as I'm mainly growing for fun now Instead of profit, and don't want the hassle of 4-5ft plants in my bedroom. I'm going 16/8 for two weeks and then onto 12/12 as I want to keep the plants small. Mainly growing to get a gauge of phenotypic plasticity.

I've gone roughly 1 gallon pots this time (as it's all I had bar the 5 gals) and was wondering if anyone had successfully ran plants in such a small container with potting mix.

The medium is a mix of peat moss, compost, dolomite and azomite with a bit of Neem meal/kelp meal for pest control and minerals. The pots are 3L and 4.5L, so close enough to a gallon.

Am I straight up wasting my time here at that size? At day 8 for the bigger seedling, and day 4 or 5 for the others.

This below will put into perspective how small the 3L pots are. 190x180mm. The bigger pots are 220x190.

I'm having a feeling with a 70x70x160 that I should grow them out until they sex, pheno hunt and then up pot the best female as I'd probably get better yields with one plant in a real pot instead of growing two or three in one gal pots to failure.

These are my own strain, male landrace from Loas crossed with BCN critical female, and then crossed with a male BCN . Grew a few earlier this year outdoors and went well. No seeds, only 1 herm out of 4. I have negative four experience breeding btw, so I'm have less than no idea what I'm doing.

I did 2 in one gln pots one time for shits and giggles and yeah can be done will need to water more often and yield not much probably better off if wanted more yield maybe doing in coco or doing one in a 5 gln than five in 1 gln

I'm mainly growing these out to get a gauge on how the phenotypes display traits, so the yield isn't very important. I'm happy if I get a few buds of a plant tbh. Just wasn't sure if 1 gal was a complete waste of time in that regard with potting mix. I'm hoping it gets me enough to get a grasp of the differing pheno traits as this is the first time I've grown this strain after crossing it with another BCN male.

Ive seen some 4ft plants on 1 gal pots of Coco, but that's a different story.

I have another 2x2 and 2x4. Just watch, what was meant to be a bit of fun in a small tent will end up with 3 plants in 5 gal pots over three tents lol. I bet you.

I ran my last plants seed to harvest in 1 gallon cloth pots. It was coco not a peat moss mix though.

I don't see why it'd be an issue if you're just pheno hunting. But what you suggested isn't pheno hunting. You'd had to clone all of them and finish them. Then keep the clone of the one that finishes the best and had the best overall properties.

What are the other two plants in the first pic? Look like cucumbers?

I'd say I'm not going to get far in this heat. AC is blown. That's 102f inside the tent ATM, and 93f in the bedroom for those not in Celcius. Summer started three days ago lol.

What are the odds of it being 39c and 39% humidity. Thought that was interesting.

You can grow plants in small containers. I do it all the time. When feeding you want to feed low levels of nutrients frequently rather than full strength every other watering or so. But that's using a full soil. I don't know how that mix you have will work out.

This is smaller than 1 gallon.

Yea, not pheno hunting, more just getting a gauge on how they grow after crossing with a male BCN.

Way to small of an operation for that haha. I think what I meant to say was that I intend to find one out of this or the next run that is stable, and I'll clone that and reverse one of the clones for feminised seeds.

Hope it's obvious I know zero on this side of the fence.

Holy shit. That's amazing. The medium I'm using is a bit off as well. Like a half amended potting mix. Probably a stupid idea to add organic nutrients to a potting mix I will have to feed anyway. I don't think there will be enough microbial life in in to break down the neem and kelp,.so I'll probs end up feeding Canna terra within two or three weeks anyway.

hi vin
i know you're already into the 1gal thing but if you were to continue to do this sort of pheno hunting thing i wanted to share this.
best size for me i've found is the #2 trade nursery pots, they're only 1.5gal but they hold enough nutes to take the plant very far into expression and some into flower without me doing anything to them.

i just up potted these to 5g but if i hadn't up potted, those wouldn't have needed feed for another 2-3 weeks. So while this may not be tips for growing in 1gal, it's more of tips on how to do what you're looking to do with much less effort. That is essentially a potting mix with organic nutes mixed in fwiw, and i mix really hot. The #2 trade nursery pots are like the ones you see just about everything in at Home Depot garden center.

Good to know smaller pots of organic are usable...that was my main concern. I would like to keep it as simple as possible. It's also handy as I have like 25gal of this mix in the back yard.

Plants look nice as well. That's about the size I'm hoping for going into flower.
