I am going to remove the mylar out of my growbox and paint it. I do not have any flat white on hand. But I do have that primer KILZ. Has anyone used this before?

I used primer on my box. It seems to work pretty good at refelecting the light. I used plywood and it soaked it up a lot. Im gonna have to give it another coat one of these days. I have some semi gloss but i figured the primer was more flat.

I am currently using mylar and I think it is creating heat, but not exactly sure though. Mostly because I did not get it put in very smooth. After this grow, I think I will bring the box down and make a few mods to it and paint it. First grow and finding ways things could be better.

I am already wanting to start my second grow, so this first one needs to hurry up. I am dying to try some new ideas during the grow process.

As far as primer goes, I dont see how paint could get any flatter than that.

Kilz is a primer, and primer is flat. As long as it's white, it will work. Flat white reflects more light than semi-gloss white.

If you buy paint, tell the paint guy you want the whitest flat white. You're painting the walls of a dark laundry closet, so you want it white, and have him add a packet of fungicide to the paint. He'll mix it in for you.

This is always worth repeating:

Here's the chart of percentages of light reflected from Jorge's latest:

Foylon 94-95
Reflective Mylar 90-95
Flat white paint 85-93
Semi-gloss white 75-80
Flat yellow 70-80
Aluminum Foil 70-75
Black < 10

Thats good to know. Thanks Potroast. I used oil based primer which i think i heard somewhere is bad. I dont know if its true but its what i had on hand so i used it. Why pay for mylar when you can use paint for only 2% less.

I found this to be VERY true myself with mylar. I bought a cool tube and once I installed it and brought the 1kw down closer to the plants the mylar FRIED the area to over 90 degrees. I have a little temp gun and was checking temps of different things regularly. With the temp gun I discovered the temp of the light in my cool tube was 85-130 degrees depending on where at the light I pointed it. Temp of the MYLAR two feet away......93 degrees. I painted regular flat white paint (2 coats) over all my mylar and retook temps at the exact same specs (same distance/light in same place). The temp of the flat white paint was 80 degrees.... a HUGE difference.
