Flood and Drain Without the Flood

I was wondering before I tried this out if anyone has tried 4" rockwool blocks on top of a .25" coco mat where they just kept the mat wet. Would the rockwool wick enough from the coco mat? I ask because it'd take 50 gallons of water to go to 1" depth in my tray and I'm not keen on getting a larger res or running my pump dry. I could do drip but I'd rather not deal with clogging drippers or adjusting them for the right moisture level.

What about using the rockwool cubes on a coco mat with a sort of NFT flow going over the coco?
try spreader matting but using a small res will create nutrient imbalances rapidly if you are running continuously. Try buying a 6 port air/nute manifold, buy the hose size that fits and cut it into equal lengths, this will even flow rate. Choose a medium that retains your feed or increase rez size.

Rockwool blocks do not wick very well. Coco does. Why not just skip the mat and use coco in small square pots (4"-5")? By skipping the mat, you will be able to move them around if need be. You would also be picking up a little extra media volume with the pots vs. the blocks.
