First off props to the RIU community, there's a wealth of knowledge here to which I owe substantial amounts of peace of mind in my moments of doubt and uncertainty. I've been experimenting quite a bit lately and wanted to give back a little to the community, here's a bit about my personal evolution. I'm a bit of a diy guy, preferring to understand principals rather than having something handed to me.
I started in soil, most of us do, however consistent watering became as issue so the next step was to implement an ebb & flow system with co2 enhancement. This worked fairly well and I was able to produce my first cross of NL x BigBud. Those seeds are still stored somewhere across the world, hopefully one day I'll get to them.
Wanting to produce a better hydro system, next I built an expandable aeroponic system.
This is shown with only three rails, I later expanded the system to a total of eight. Each rail was filled with clones on a weekly basis and I could move the rails down the line so the last rail was always the one that was harvested before being cleaned and brought to the beginning of the line. This was my first SOG attempt. This might be dating myself but my lights were housed in a separate glass plenum that ran the length of the garden because there were no vent ducts in lighting hoods at the time.
The nozzles were simple enough, essentially a hole drilled sideways in a female pvc fitting, the corresponding male fitting tightened into it to reduce or expand the blockage in the hole. Adjustable spray, no clogs - not quite a fine mist more like a jet. This is where I first observed how healthy roots formed.
Took a long break and just recently got back into it with again a soil grow, this time with a passive wick system. This one sucked, the plants always wanted water and I throughly stressed them due to lack of consistent watering.
