Ive heard both; is it better to use two 24 inch flourscent grow lights to germinate a leaf, then switch over to a 400HPS?

or am I better off putting straight in a 400HPS (like 2 feet away)?

The fluoro light is fine for the first two weeks. After that, run the 400W from then on. 24 hours of light is ok with the flouro, but 18/6 is fine when you switch to HPS. Start at 2-3 feet away from the plant(s) and work your way down to 12" or less if the heat isn't too bad. Check for heat by placing your hand at the same level as the top of your plant(s). If the heat is too hot for your hand then you need to raise the light accordingly.
