Anything that isn't sold goes to recycling so why not allow others the opportunity to get some use out of it? I liked them a lot. Low fuss, very bright, and great in terms of heat and my grow space (2'x2', 150W, stopped running AC, just an 80cfm exhaust fan through a carbon scrubber, temps up to 97F with lights on, but also my grow room circumstances were... not usual, so you might be able to do a lot better). My plants seemed very happy under both bulbs. I was never able to pit their flowering capabilities against one another, I didn't have enough time with them, but I'm guessing the differences would be minimal. I was seeing stunted growth (what I believe was light stress) with the reflector about 12" above the canopy. The girl I had underneath it straightened out, held her leaves up much more boldly, and showed very rapid growth after raising the light to 14-16". I had 10W of supplemental 630nm that were at full brightness for ~5 hours and then dimmed to virtually nothing (I had a NiMH trickle charger of sorts that I found in a drawer that I was using as the driver), but it's flowering potential completely alone seemed more than adequate to me. Wish I had more time with them, they seemed like keepers.

And just my rambling thoughts, but within the Philips paperwork it mentions not breaking the glass because of UV exposure. They don't want people spending hours every day underneath that much UV. I wonder if it's possible to break the glass safely and how plants would respond. No idea how much UV output plants would actually see if breaking the glass is safe for the bulb (which I'm unsure of and don't immediately recommend), but I can't imagine UV output would be at unsafe levels for the plants if this modification was at least safe for the bulb. Breaking the glass might be dangerous due to the vacuum and you also should keep in mind some of the bulbs have safety measures (a spring loaded contact, I'm assuming) so that when the glass breaks the contact springs open and the bulb won't work anymore. My guess is you could solder that connection closed, or simply find bulbs without that safety measure in place. Would have been interesting to spend time testing this theory, too, even if it only ever amounted to a broken, useless bulb.
