Found this HPS (street light?) & wired it up. Safety concern/cpl questions, plz help!!

Hey guys I found this hps light. I'm guessing it's hps im not 100% sure. Looks like an old street light/spot light or somethin. I wired it up and plugged it in and she works fine. My question is - is this thing safe the way I have it wired up. Does it need a ballast or is that built in? And does anyone know what wattage the bulb is? Pictures provided below


Do I need a certain kind of cable to handle the voltage or will this suffice?

solder the join? just wrapping in insulation tape isnt the safest but if you aint an idiot it should be fine, better way would have been to just put a plug on the end of the original cord.

there wasnt much length on the original cord, its only about a foot or so, and yea nothing was soldered, I just connected the wires, wrapped each connection in electrical tape and then wrapped all 3 connections together after with the tape. I may look into moving one of my electrical outlets so the original cord can reach tho, I like your idea of just putting a plug on the end

Use some wire nuts.


Then tape. If it were to fall the tape wouldn't hold and then have bare wires.

Solder and heat shrink. Otherwise DO NOT accidentally step on that wire lol. Western union splice works good too but i still wouldnt trust my life with that.

It's been running for a few hrs now and I've noticed some condensation inside the case. Should that be cause for concern?

Looks like the seal on that thing is busted, get a new light bro good try to cheap out on a light but you can get a whole setup for under 300$.

How hard is it to fix a broken seal tho?

Not hard. If it was outside that's why there is moisture. Unplug and let in dry out for a couple days and your good. You don't need to seal it up. Remove the glass. Clean the thing and go buy a new 150w bulb.

I wouldn't think it would be a hard fix. High temp silicone.

I worked maintain at a place that had equipment from the 30's through the 50's.

I like old stuff. Old stuff is built better.

i found a 1k mh in a tiny hood, almost like a spotlight..really directional you know. prolly was once a street light

a buddy is using it to grow, built in ballast.. working pretty good. gets hot as fuck.. but working pretty good
