I'm on my 4th or 5th run of trying to make concentrates from alcohol. Previously I've only used 99.9% ISO and have always had a weird after taste. Learning a bit more and adapting after each run. I am only running sugar trim and lower popcorn buds.
Finally I was able to get a hold of some 190 proof ethanol (Everclear). I also fresh froze my trim and "froze" the Everclear, which I had never done before. I washed the frozen trim for <30 seconds and immediately strained in a metal strainer before fine filtering through coffee filters and pouring into a Pyrex dish to dry. It took a lot longer for the ethanol to dry up without heat compared to the 99.9% ISO. After the first day I put a fan blowing over top of the dish and that really sped things up. It dried up completely about 2 days later.
It was the clearest residue I have ever got so far. The initial scraping resulted in fine white powder which after collecting into a pile and adding light heat resulted in this beautiful yellow hue. Everything I've got back previously has been much darker.
I'm sure that freezing the trim and Everclear was the main reason it came out so much better. But there is absolutely no weird after taste at all. I can take a pretty big hit from a vape and hold it in without a problem, whereas before it always made me cough like mad. It also burns real clean and doesn't leave a waxy residue build-up on the coils.
I think my next step will be to try fresh frozen again with frozen 99.9% ISO and see if I notice a difference between Everclear and ISO extractions. I would love to hear any other experience between the two.
Here is some Tangilope from DNA. Taste is magnificent, like buttery tangerines, if that makes any sense.
