Frozen Seeds

I read that too, very recently from a pm off fdd. this thread will now be turned into an experiment... as I germinate frozen seeds, the others I'll allow to defrost first.

I'm just hoping that the sudden defrost of the frozen seeds doesn't kill them. I'm sure I'll soon find out, although the experiment would still not be accurate as this would have to be done with at least a hundred seeds, both frozen and not to iron out any naturally weak performers.

Just getting them back into room temp. air for a day or so should make them ok to germ. As long as you dont TRY to defrost them (ie. microwave or fast warming).

But I wanna see how it goes though.

How would you tell ? some take 24hrs some can take a week to germ

couldnt see there be much to defrost in such a little seed, but you could see if it makes a difference in the germ rate

i've recently boughten flower seeds. several of the packages state to freeze the seeds before germing for a better success rate. i think it has something to do with them thinking it was winter and now that they have thawed it is spring so they pop faster. just a guess.

I haven't even gotten the seeds out of the freezer yet. Just harvested about half of my mother plant and hung them to dry, also a few other things. I'll start this n the morning, first thing.

One of the frozen seeds is the first to pop... in under 24 hours the shell has cracked and the first sign of a tail can be seen. It's the seed top right, my camera isn't too clever.

... as far as i know are weed seeds not frosting resistant as some other seeds are...

hey skunkushybrid, if you happen to have some cloning hormone handy treat them with this to increase the chance that the pop. i really would love to know if there is some life left in them.

Huh? I should hope there's life in them... they're fresh out the pack. I've never failed a germ' (from viable seed)... never. Why would the life be gone from them?

Are you placing a curse on me?

Freezing usually isn't a good idea, my friend lost quite a few packages of seeds thinking that would help... the fridge is a better option, that way ice crystals don't puncture the cell walls, it can happen if the seeds aren't quite ripe or absorbed moisture from their surroundings (high humidity etc).

no, i don't:? i thought those been frozen... or am i now totally lost again?:lol:
#is they are fresh, never frozen the spruce for sure, at least they are supposed to do so, if the been frozen... no clue whats gone happen:neutral:

but for sure i haven't placing a curse on you, no idea how to do such things:D

Yes, they've been frozen... and all 5 will germinate by tomorrow morning. Guaranteed, they're all split now, and will be ready by tomorrow.

I have a frost-free freezer.

Also, the seeds were in their original packet, inside another original packet, which was then placed into a food storage back alongside some trim I have frozen, which were then placed into a large carrier bag.

I have never heard or read that it is bad to freeze your seeds. If any of these do not survive then that is the way it is meant to be. I'm only looking for the one decent fem'... the rest can... well, I'll leave it to your imagination.

To prevent the accidental germination of seeds, store in waterproof, lightproof container. A quality coin deposit box is recommended and this also has a lock to protect your valuable collection. If you need to store your seeds for an extended period of time, place them in a moisture proof container and place that container inside another moisture proof container so that they are double sealed. Store the container at -10C/14F or cooler temperatures.

i have no clue where i heard that one, guess i grow a bit to long by now to remember all the myst i was told and from whom i been told :D
