k so its time to flower and im dying to get an hps....is there an inexpensive way to make a homemade lamp? I went to Lowes and bought one of those security lamps....before i bought it i asked the pre-occupied douche if a ballast was included and of course he said yes. Brought that bitch home and you can guess the rest. Anyways i was wondering if i could just buy the bulbs and fixtures...or something along those lines cuz 100 bucks for a 150w hps isnt very fun especially when a ballast isnt included. Anyone have any ideas? thanks

Did you read the box to verify that statement? 100 bucks would sound a little too good to be true for that, I would have at least opened the box to check it out myself. Take it back and get what you need.

Ya of course i checked the box but when youre in a hurry youd think asking an associate working in lighting would know!? Youd pay 100 bucks for a 150w hps lamp w/o a ballast over a whole 400w setup for the same price?? Thanks gygax thats a wayyy better deal!!

Those lights are different than grow lights dude. A ballast is what we use to power our lights so we dont have to wire them right into the wall. Secruity lights are made to be wired up. There is no ballast man, your wires are the ballast. All you need to do is wire that up to a plug and theres your ballast, haha.

Edit: And you can get a plug at lowes that is bare on one end made for like fixing extension cords and stuff. That will work fine im sure. As long as its rated high enough.

k Cheif the point is i was looking for a light with a ballast; something to plug in. I asked the dude if it had a ballast cuz i knew most of those lights (security) needed to be wired up.

Wow that's crazy, same exact thing happened to me! I was at lowe's today and asked an associate where to find ballasts for the 100w HPS i was buying. He says you don't need it, you can just plug those into any old socket. I was skeptical, but thought he knew better than I did. so now I have to go return the thing :-?.

No problem the guy who runs the place is good at customer service too...he doesn't have a lot of high end items but a 400watt for that price is great...I own one BTW never had a problem.

You guys are both wrong. Those 100 and 125w HPS BULBS can go into any socket. It may not be safe cause most sockets are rated for that much but it will work. Now, once you get up to like 150w or something like that it goes into something called a MEDIUM MOGUL or ANSI52 or something...those are the street light looking secruity lights lowes sells. You dont get a ballast for those, nor do they make them. They are just bigger bulbs that go in a bigger socket. So yes, for the ones you have you can put them in "any old socket" and it will light up. Is it safe, probably not. All you have to do is buy a socket rated for something that high. So once again, im right. Also, the reason lowes sells some 175w and up HPS and MH bulbs is because they use to carry those lights but they dont any more. They have to continue to carry bulbs for customers who own those lights. As for the 100w and the one you got they do carry them, they have to be wired (3 wires) and you can buy a cord for like 5 bucks that has a plug on one end and bare wires on the other made for this exact thing if you dont want to buy the light fixture.

lol this thread has gone on with no correct answer, the 150w hps u bought has a ballast and everything you need to run the light, all you need to do is wire it to a heavy duty extension cord so it can be plugged in to your house sockets.

the same thing happened to me when I was first learning about lighting. They kept asking me what I needed so much light for too...I told them I was an agriculture major from a local college. Anyways, they told me I could use the sockets he showed me with the metal halide bulb. This was a "lighting expert" working...I had to convince him that it wouldn't work when I brought back and plug it in. Anyways, I am using CFLs now and am going to use these before I spend money on a HID system

DoobsDay thats exactly what i said like 8 post ago. No i didnt detail where the ballast was, but i did say it doesnt come with a ballast. I guess i should have been more exact and said it doesnt have an external ballast that you plug in.
