Germinating seeds on my ballast

Never put water near electricity, you can get an instant fire.
These seeds don't need warmth but it will speed their germination, a couple days won't make a difference over the length of the grow.
Do you need to do this?

I put my seeds in a cup of water anywhere and I usually have 100% germ

Put a plate or dish (heat resistant/not plastic) between bag and ballast...so if anything leaks or melts it wont get to the ballast.

I am curious why people use this extra step as well. I used to use clones so I have only planted around 15 seeds but I just put them in a starter pot and in a few days they sprout.
Is there some benefit of using the paper towel method instead of just putting the seed straight into the medium?

For the impatient it allows you to see the progress. I would be digging through the soil to see if the seed had sprouted. This way I get to feel special!
Edit: also I'm doing dwc and these seeds are going straight into hydroton. I wanted to know they were sprouted before putting them in.

There is no benefit, the end result is a seedling in both cases. There are a lot of fails using paper towels and few using soil.

I would be worried about damaging the tiny root and I imagine thats where people run into problems.
Out of I think 15 seeds I've planted I only had one not sprout so I'll stick with going straight into the dirt. I like to keep things as simple as possible as long as it works.
