Germinating?

I have germinated 6 seeds so far and 5 came out with roots. The first time I read that placing the seed in a cup of water is how to germinate them. That first time also didn't work. Months later I tried 3 seeds in the damp paper towel way it the three came out with healthy looking roots. I read from site to site that the cup of water way is best and others say the paper towel trick works best... So I ask you now rollitup community; what is the best way to germinate seeds? Does it depend on the strain? Does it depend on indica/sativa? What do you do?

I do both, I soak the seeds till they drop, then when they look like they are starting to crack I do the paper towell trick. Everyone has their own methods. Just do what works best for you.

The best way none of the above. Its been proven that germing seeds can and does (from time to time) cause the seeds to water log and ruin, catch bacteria and either not grow at all or be retarded and several other side effects. The best way IMO is to plant the un-touched seed in ur medium of soil or high quality rock wool.

i think its safe to say that these ways arent gunna kill them or make them retarded just by experience, but what results you going with the plain rockwool/soil? sounds like it could work? although i have never tried rockwool although im interested to now.

Not sure how to link this I'm an old guy, but its from CrackerJax and the thread is "Starting your seeds"

I have read plenty more on the matter, especially from some of riu top growers. I have never grown anything but bagseed before, but this is the way I always grow and I can't remember the last time I had a seed fail to sprout. I can find more if you need em.

Actually I've read alot that it will infact kill seeds and thats why so many people complain about seeds that won't crack when the germ process killed them

just put in water overnight this will help seeds absorb moisture then move to a wet paper towel in a dark location and b patient

Absorbing water is the whole thing you want to avoid. Seeds already have a sealed moisture "ring" within them. Soaking them is a way many people ruin seeds.

Im sure they all definately works, i guess the factor that is debatably is how consistant of a germination is it... but sounds like u got alot of history. ill give it a try with my new seed thanks

I think your making a good choice. Like I said some of the top growers just plant them medium and go on with it. :leaf:

Thanks, was able to find the thread fine. Personally, I do put my seeds directly in the grow medium, and believe I have stated so in previous threads. That being said I have germinated enough seeds to supply Amsterdam in paper towels and the results on a good batch of seeds were almost always 100%. If the towel is not to wet, the bag has some air left in it, and is placed in a dark place there shouldn't be to many issues. Also of course if left in the bag they'll rot but that seems obvious because it's probably around 100%rh in those bags.

Absolutely, and it works well most of the time. I've done it both ways and now I just believe who am I to change the way this plant grew for 1000s of years on its own without me messing things up for it. Just my 2 cents worth.:leaf:

my way= i have a piece of terry cloth and folded paper towel tat itraced a plastic cup bottom on then cut out
first i cut a bottom about one inch or less of a plastic cup
put in my folded napkin ( it is cut with circle right on fold so it opens like a book)
place bean in it
cover put terry cloth on top sometimes i put one on top and bottom to hold moistuer and to keep been down in water with weight
fill tiny cup place on heating pad flip a full cup on top of it for darkness and humidity

i soak underwater overnight next day most times split if not i soak another overnight in peroxide (works miricles)

if not split the next day i dump all liquid that will run off on its own when i hold on its side so now just damp

from ther i leave untill split once split to soil cerran wrap on top of cup until it shows its head then to flour light

after about a week if i dont see anysplits going on i start scarcification i have picked the little cover over the split , i have pierced the split line with a razer carful not to damage inside, have picked a piece of the shell off , i have sand papered a seed has no choice but to produce here or it will be sorry.

Many of the seedbanks suggest planting straight in the substrate. The three keys are moisture( medium should be moist , NOT WET), darkness (the darker the better) and and warmth(80 - 90 degrees). If your room gets lower than 74 you may have issues, I did until I started germing in the garage where its 83-89 and 100% since.
