Well, it's almost that time. My first seeds are about to drop and I'm pretty excited.

I was wondering, after I drop my seeds into the soil, do I cover the tops on the containers with plastic wrap with holes in it? I have heard a lot of mixed opinions on this.

Hopefully there are other night owls on here, willing to help me out. Thanks guys!

I've done it both ways (with or without) never put holes in the plastic myself. But once they were about an inch tall I took away the dome.

I am experimenting to see what works fror me: soak seeds for 4 hours several times. When first seed starts a root place seeds in soil proper side up: root side up. Will get a photo of my hydo start. Anyone need cantaloupe starts? Hot dog containers from QT work well : easy on pin hole ventilation if near a draft. Or get fancy with a pound baloney package and a two liter bottle plenty high.

Wet paper towel until the seed splits and you get ~1/2" of root sticking out. Plant about 1" deep with the root end down. Very low light, even a 15w 18" kitchen light will be enough to get them out of the ground. CFLs about 8 inches up are great too. After a week or so start training them on your HIDs from a distance until you harden them and dial the light as close as possible without heat stress by week 2.

my tried and true germ technique is to put the seeds in a wet paper towel in a dish somewhere warm and dark. the seed shells usually pop within 3 days. if they don't it usually means they arent goin to sprout. if a seed looks really big try scratching it to weaken the outer shell, sometimes it can be hard to sprout through a thicker shell. i dont think you should be using any plastic. plastic is really bad for people....you know about the plastic leaching into water bottles, not to microwave in plastic, etc etc....same goes for plants because most cling wrap is not made of high quality plastic. so ur already starting ur plants off being exposed to unhealthy things...not good! you can definitely soak the seeds for a day and then try putting them in a wet paper towel, or skip the paper towel if u see the seed falls to the bottom of the cup when u poke it. that means its good to go into the soil
