Germing and planting?

Hello all i am going to be doing a second grow and need a 100% success rate. The last time i did my grow i used the papertowel method and it took two days for the white tails to show. Then i planted them and gave them 400ml of water and put the light on them right away. I had 4 out of 5 plants survive..Anyone think this is a good way to do it?? If anyone has a better idea or any input it would be great thanks

Jiffy plugs, you add water drop your seed in, put them into some kind of propogator, and hey presto! No risk of transplant shock.

The method I use for germinating has up to now 100% succes rate:

Put the seed in a moist paper towel, which you keep in an air tight or almost air tight container, which you place on a heat source, no higher than 40C/104F (I just use the radiator). Be careful, due to the heat, the towel may become dry, so it's ideal to spray it once every 1-3h, depending on temps.

You'll be surprised how fast the tap root shoots out and how long it will be. After planting the seed tap root down into the soil or medium (always use small cups, glasses, cubes) I place the cup on the radiator. Roots grow downwards in nature because they are attracted to heat. This is why most people that start placing the seedling under light too early will have a root or two sticking out of the medium.

In 2-3 days the root system will be strong enough to permit the seedling to hatch and spread it's leaves.

Thanks bro good input makes sense. So after i plant the seeds i shouldnt put the light on them right away? If not, how long should i leave them in the dark for?

You want your seeds to become cooked? That temp is way too high as well. I used to be an advocate of paper towels not anymore. You asked for an alternative? Taproots are fragile you do not want to risk damage to it. There are tiny hairs on the taproot that will get damaged with paper towels. Plant straight into soil or a jiffy plug and you take the risk away.there are a few decent threads on here on the subject, you should maybe read these. Dont want to see you waste beans.

Also in my experience, seedlings are above the ground and developing well within the time frame of 2 to 3 days.

Put light on the seedling only when the frist pair of leaves have shed the shell and are starting to unravel. Keep the soil moist.

Also, don't worry about the heat, if the radiator is giving out 100F and you keep the soil moist, the seed won't experience temps of over 85F.

Always keep in mind, seeds and roots develop and grow towards heat.

Ddn't know that. Will look into other germination options, thanks.

Was a paper towel man myself for long enough, swore it was the best method. Until i looked into it. Tried the jiffy plugs and so far 100 percent, early days yet only done 25 seeds. But i truly believe since changing my seedlings appear stronger and healthier from the outset. But at the end of the day its down to personal choice!

Hmm, doesn't sound like a bad idea to check this out.

Did you notice that the stem of the seedling stays smaller or that the leaves grow faster, cause I've been interested for quite a white in a method that really speeds up the seedlings growth. Afterwards, when I can add nutes and other stuff, it's all ok.

My current batch of seedlings are 6 days old. They have 2 sets of leaves with a third coming through fast. You could try a couple of beans in jiffy plugs and some using paper towel method. Just to see the difference. Doing them in paper towels, you gotta wait for the seed to pop, then plant them and wait for them to break through the soil. The last batch of 5 seeds i did in jiffy plugs were through the surface and growing within 36 hrs. I may even do a grow myself to compare the 2 methods.

Most definately! Would be interesting. Think i may do a comparison grow. But i do think the jiffys will prevail, only time will tell! If you do get round to doing it post your conclusions mate. Will be a while before i do it, no room to start anymore seeds just now!

i've been using the paper towel method for a while with good success. I've been contemplating planting right in the soil though...

give it a bash mate. You may never use a paper towel again after you try it!
