Germintation after 8days?

Hey,
I got some ak47 x lr x afghan kush from the doc just recently. I'm germintating in a drawer (not sealed) using the following method:

top: upside down cereal bowl
moist paper towel
seeds (7)
moist paper towel
bottom: plate

temp ~75
tap water

its been 8 days so far and I'm not seeing any roots. I think a few of the seeds have cracked, but not quite sure: I inspected them on arrival and think I would have noticed if they were cracked then (the inspection didn't warrant any action).

Should I be worried?

ok i just made the same mistake of using the wet papertowel. i found that if there in the paper towel im more likely to dink with them. id say put them in some soil and let the seed do its magic. i did this and i had a 100 percent germ rate the 2nd time around anyway.

Unfortunately I don't have access to soil until the end of the week. Can anyone support their advice with scientific reasons on how its superior to what I'm doing right now. I'm not trying to make an $80 and 2wk mistake here...

what youve done sounds fine to me,i always use the wet paper towel method, and it always works,it usually takes 3 days max but sometimes it takes longer!i dont know why yours are taking so long?just be patient, the root should start to grow out the seeds,if they dont then they must be bad seed,,,,,dont keep um too wet,but dont let the paper towels dry,,just wet,but not drenched!

Ok, i have done this 4 times and its worked every time here....I get a tupperware container, like the throw away gladlock ones....get a paper towel, fold it a couple times....and soak it good....put the seeds in it and fold it in half. I put a little bit of water in the bottom of the container like 3 spoonfulls....this is crucial, it has to be in a totally dark place. I always put mine on the back of the fridge....put a towel over top to ensure no light gets in. And crack the container just a bit at the corner.... I have seen results in as little as 1 day...and never more than three....good luck, sounds like you got some bunk seeds or maybe they got moldy by now and wont sprout...

I understand the tupperware and bag are meant to increase the humidity. How much will the humidity increase in these sealed containers vs. my inverted bowl?

Just like when your growing, humidity has to escape...if it doesnt just like a plants roots, the seed with mold....it will still crack, or open...but nothing may ever come out...
As far as the humidity, i cant tell you exactly but it will be alot better like those of a grow box....55-65 percente range...did u put the papertowel in a plastic bag or did you just put the bowl over it...???

I just put the bowl over per the description in the OP. All have cracked and are showing some white stuff but at least 1 feels soft, is this the result of rot?

If I were to provide you with the weight of the papertowl @ average moisture, would anyone be able to tell if its too much or too little?

This is the way the Green House Seed Co recommends you start your seeds WWW.GREENHOUSESEEDS.NL - Green House Seed Co. Amsterdam Since 1985. It could be the seeds or your method. I did not have good luck with paper towel, it is too easy to get too wet. I soak mine in a cup of distilled water for 12hrs and then put them in a wash cloth and a plastic bag and i set it in my propagation tray with a seed heating mat under it to keep them warm. I have everything in a dark closet. I check them every 12-24 hrs until they show a root. Do not touch them with you hands. Use sterilized tweezers when you plant them. I am running to some problems myself. I am able to get them to germinate. I plant them in rock wool cubes or rapid rooter sponges and put them in my tray with the dome on top and put them under CFL's but they never seem to develop or sprout. I am still trying to figure that one out. I got one strain of Norther Lights that just will not crack. I think those are just old bunk seeds from the breeder. All of the other ones will germ but just won't sprout. I got one Big Bud to sprout in my Aerogarden thats it.

I just bring water to a rolling boil. Toss some paper toils in the boiling water for a few minutes. Drain the water, let the paper towels cool for a few minutes and put them in a bowl. Put the seeds on the paper towel, fold the towel over them, cover the bowl with foil and usually in about 3 days I'm ready to put in soil/rockwool.
