hey man they come from the soil, unless you had sanitized soil, thts where they came from, the damn bugs lay eggs in the soil and when you start to water you plants, they spring to life!! i had them, try getting a cup of beer and mixe a little soap in it, leave it in your grow room, they like the CO2 and they get stuck and die in the soap.. HA :) /.... next time throw your soil in the micro wave and zap it, this kills the eggs.

I don't know which brand soil your using but the infamous MG has a strong tendency to contain gnat eggs. Try adding some ladybugs if available, I did this when I had a gnat infestation and they were gone within days.

mg is miracle grow....DO NOT SPRAY SOAPY water on your plant though!!! I got some Shultz Rose & Flower Insect Spray Garden Safe for indoor plants....I mostly spray all the soil real well and some of the lower leaves but I dont spray the tops or much else of the plant...and thats how I got rid of mine...I have 2 mutant plants that i experiment on and its harder to keep the gnats off them cuz i pay less attention...but that bug spray is at walmart for like $5 bucks...

i never had problems with fox farm soil before, sorry that you are. but dont let it discourage you and your grow. your plants feel your vibe so try to leave your 'tude at the door so to speak. there two different options, one you can put all kinds of different junk in your soil and kill them and hope it doesnt fuk shi up. or youo can do what i do, complete xplant. i simply slide the rootball out of the pot and knock as much dirt as possible from the roots and take notice to the color of the roots white fuzzy good, discolored yellow brownish = dead. the larve from the gnats feed on the roots themselves before maturing to adults with wings. take away these dead roots gently or you will have future problems with root rot and other desieses in the very near future. the happy frog you were using, was it kept out side or in a garage for a period of time before using? you might want to get some different soil, i am assuming if you are capable of getting happy from you can get ocean forest also, seald bags, no rips, fresh if possible. superthrive or vitamine b1 and plenty of TLC. good luck and happy growing

who said they were having a problem with Fox Farm soil....I dont use ff soil...my gnats came from the dirt I used in my seedling cups it was just some shyt from outside that I left in a pot....thats when I was just going to see what would happen and not take it so serious but when i transplanted I used Supersoil that garuntees against pests..

get some gnat off, its great and it works. sort it out fast because if you see lots of gnats it means they already have done the damage when they were maggots and they will be laying more eggs right now. if your plants are small they can completely eat through your roots until it dies. gnat off is used at 1ml per litre of nute solution and it has a bacteria that produces a toxin that kills the maggots. its completely organic and non toxic to mammals. although it is £20 for a small bottle

as a newbie I haave had a couple of gnat problems I have tried several cures but there are 3 that work for me without fail

1 microwave the soil before you plant!!!! when I did this never had a gnat problem

2 if you see gnats, pour peroxide in the pots, not much just enough to make it fuzz up, I did this and 24 hours later no gnats, and my plants were fine

3 finally if all else fails lets the pots go dry, gnats need moisture to survive, let your plants get to the point of almost wilting

I have experimented with these 3 methods with success, the soap didnt work for me neither did the sticky fly traps or the beer in the cup

The soap does work for you plants its a 'wetting agent' recommended by gardening professionals across the country. To control gnats you would add Neem Oil as well, one tablespoon of each mixed with a gallon of water. Most of the ready made sprays use Neem Oil as the active ingredient, about 3%. SM-90 and Dia$%#&^ earth are effective for controlling gnats and the mosquito dunks work as well. All of them are safe, your pets could safely drink the water with mosquito dunks in it.
The damage done by fungus gnats is below the soil by the larvae. They feed on the hairs of the roots, stunting growth and also use the nutrients. By the time you notice them you are ready to be invested with them. Deal with it now. VV
