Sweet! You are going to love it there. You will find yourself putting your stash in your pocket and walking outside the shop and looking both directions. On my second trip, we learned that the Dutch would set and LOL at people that did that. Its pretty darn safe there, great public transportation. Just be weary that if you are a drinker and plan on getting totally wasted, make sure it is in a place that does not have steps the the bathroom. The steps in Amsterdam are steeper than anything you have ever seen in your life. Many places also want you to pay .50 Euro to use the bathroom. Make sure you also pay attention to your Euros, cause they have a $1 euro that is like our quarter.
Ask for tap water when you go out. They want to charge you an arm and a leg for beverages there, there are no free refills on anything. Some places refuse to give you tap waterm just act like you are going to get up and leave and they will bring it to you. Our first morning there we had 25 bucks in coffee and bottled water charges on our check!!! Go to the market your first day there and load up on snacks, water, bread, cheese and other things that will not spoil if you do not have a frig in your room. Trust me dude, the shit is expensive over there. I would also have a snack before you go eat, they like to take their sweet time in waiting on you. If you act in a hurry, they may just chastize you for it.
Check out the Heinekin brewery, they give you samples along the way. The Van Gough is okay but it is nothing like the Rijks Museum. If you do get over to that side of town, check out Mai Thai on Korte Leidswedwarsstrat. Good Thai food at great prices. WHAT EvER YOU DO DONT EAT at the sports bar by the Bulldog. That place is gross as hell.
