I recently got a copy of Google Sketchup and let me tell you, it's amazing. I'm running it on this piece of shit laptop and still it does an amazing job. Sketchup is Google's answer to a autocad type design program. It has amazing functionality and is extermely easy to use. I encourage everyone who is interested in planning their builds out before hand to give it try.
