400 will be very hot but the foot print more like 3x3 not 5 x2 so the if you can find a better more square space you could make 4 huge plants from your 400

i'm not recommending this but i can say that my box is about 3 x 4 x 8 and I use a dual-spectrum light (total 1000w). i air-cool it and use a separate exhaust fan to keep it cool (in the winter it stays around 74 F and the summer jumps up to about 85 F average).

you should look at VictorVicious's grow journal and learn about CFLs and LEDs. If i were building a new box I would study that and buy all of seemorebuds materials (books/dvds)

You can go with a 400 watt as long as you have proper ventilation. 250 watt may due the job but keep in mind no matter what you use, you'll need proper ventilation. Otherwise you will have temps/humidity issues.

Hey Tech...I just setup a closet with the same dimensions as your's.

I'm using a 400w hps and using this fan to cool/vent it.
This will work for my bulb, but anything bigger than a
400w you may want to in-line cool it.

Here is an idea for a setup...

if i were you i would go with 2-250's your area is narrow and long so a single light would not reach the ends properly, a cheaper alternative would be a 400 on a track to run back and forth, that setup would kick some serious ass, otherwise i would go with 4-6 bulbs of t5 light, that would give good results
