Grow techniques for a first time grower.

Should I be doing anything like LST FIMing, topping etc. on my first grow? I’ve done my research but I’m not arrogant enough to think I’m a master grower cause I read a few things on the internet. I plan on starting a thread in grow journals for people to give their input as I go along, catch me there in a week once I’m back from vacation. Till then, smoke one for the kid :bigjoint:

It is up to you.
I like that you are trying to keep it simple. That's a good way to start.

But at a minimum I would train the plant.
There is plenty of info on the methods.

Read up on the pros and cons.
Then pick one that suites you and the space you are working on.

I started with topping.
Then lst style bending
Scrog etc..

As long as the plants are healthy they are pretty tough.

please keep it simple on your first grow, it's best to just let the plant do its thing so that you can have the idea of the growth pattern and its stages.

its good to learn those styles, only after you have what i've said above...then if you think you can do it, go for it

just do the above first, then go from there

baby steps , gotta walk before you can run

I would suggest not to do ANY training within your first grow, not because it‘s hard to learn, but you will never see a plant grow naturally! Watch the plant grow as she likes the first time, and try to collect as many infos as possible for yourself. Only after this experience you can really understand the difference some kind of training will make. And you will „understand“ what you are doing, and not just follow stupidly some guide.

haha boy that's a mind blower, making me old, cause that's how i learned

old guy told me " if you can grow a tomato indoors, you can grow weed"
I'm 52. Been playing with worms since I was 4. My grandfather used me like a Mule on Summer breaks in the Garden. He could make anything grow. I got lucky and had my education forced into me. :weed:

i used to help my grandmother in her garden when i could. It's my grandfathers friend that told me that......

she used to tell me, i had the green thumb like her

always wondered why she was so happy, now i know...lol

Think it’s cool if I keep one untrained and try different techniques on my other 2? I plan to start with 3 plants.

I already have answered this question with „yes!“, but it became a desaster. So now I would say „no!“ :D

But it‘s all up to you! What is your goal? Just have a little fun and if you fuck up it won‘t matter. Or do you need some medicine, and can‘t accept a loss. Is money important, or can you say „I don‘t give a fuck“, and start with more plants, just to choose the most healthiest ones before flipping them, and throw away the rest. How is your grow room? Are you height restricted, or won‘t it become a problem? And so on....

I couldn’t grow a plant without training, just because I have only 3ft (2,5ft before) height wise. I hope you get what I want to say... and I can just repeat what the other dudes said, just keep it simple, it will give you most benefits. There are still so many aspects to learn and adjust, it won‘t get boring anyways! Actually the most important question is, WHY DO YOU WANT TO TRAIN YOUR PLANT? Only fun? Than do it! Did you read, that your yields will be way bigger with training? Than don‘t do it! :D

If you can get some bag seed and have the room... Knock your self out. The basic are used for all grows. Food, Water and atmosphere. Your going to kill a few plants. That's part of the game.

I mean I obviously read it’s gonna give higher yields but I’m looking to grow in general for fun. But if I’m the long run, not training will teach me more and get me more experience to then get better yields I’m obvious gonna do that. You guys know wayyy more than me that’s why I’m here haha. As far as my grow room I think I’m going to get a tent but I have to really see if my attic isn’t too cold once I get back home. If I can use the attic I have more than enough height for them to grow. if I fuck up I get seeds for cheap. can I reuse soil?

I consider myself still as a noob! So much to learn. I just started reusing and cooking my own soil now, because I want to water only.

If you don‘t mind mixing nutes, maybe coco would be nice for you, but every growing technique will come with it‘s own problems, and you need to learn how to master yours.

And starting with some cheap seeds is good! I just bough my first pack of 150$ seeds, I don‘t want to make mistakes now... but at this point I have already learned how to proper germinate, water, and take cuts. I don‘t have this feeling anymore, that made me pop too many seeds at a time. I am more relaxed now, and will take my time to look through the pack one by one.

I started with 30$ seeds, K.C. Brains + Mandala Seeds. I just have grown outdoor in north europe, really difficult due to rain and mold. So I didn‘t wanted to waste my money. But now with indoor equipment and the possibility to keep every plant in a mother room, it‘s worth it in my opinion, to look at high quality genetic, because I will have the plant, as long as I wish.

Make your first grow as simple as possible. What do you have to lose, the whole plant or getting an extra joint's worth of bud? Plant the seed, add water and lighting, learn, and never water it again! Well, OK. You can water it again, but never as much as you'll want to. These forums contain a lot of very good information. But they tend to lean towards the very experienced or OCD. Start by getting experience first.

I wouldn’t say their cheap seeds or bad genetics, I just get them cheap. My buddy works for a seed bank. I got blue dream, girl scout cookies and white widow for an average $5 a seed. He also told me I could take his old hydroponic system for cheap but I hear that’s harder cause of something goes wrong you might lose everything and fast.

If you're going to go hydro, fantastic. If growing is your passion, you'll want to take him up on his offer. MEGA difference in results for a perfect grow. With that in mind, it's a bit harder to say how you should go about your first grow. But by soil with the genetics you've stated, you'll still learn some very important lessions.

I can pick up the hydro whenever, I just thought soil would be easier to learn with for my first time. Or is it so different that if I want to ever do hydro I should just start with it?

Most problems are the same. But soil is much more forgiving. Just don't over fertilize. That said, hydro is the way to go if you're already going to spend a good bit of time with them. I grow in soil and still spend enough time with them to be hydro. I just need two plants at a time though. Personally, soil is just too easy to do something else.
