Harvesting the plant & drying out HELP

Ive harvested the tree, removed all the fan leaves and have began the drying out process. Ive got the buds drying in a cupboard (very dark) and have a fan gently blowing over them, the problem is Ive noticed the buds have become VERY CRIPSY and DRY. Im wondering if it is to do with the strain as its an unknown strain (Seeds were givin by a friend) and wondering if this is a problem with the drying out process or the strain is the problem. Ive also tried to make the buds more moist by adding a orange pill to a glass jar with the buds inside. This gave the buds a better look, but upon drying them out again the same thing happen, Turned very dry and crispy and weren't that nice of a smoke. Any ideas / better trying out processes that I could use.

Thanks:-o

I would try pulling that direct air your blowing on them now off of them.they need some fresh air but try te send it indirectly to them at a slower rate. That helped with me at this same issue.

It's from the fan, jus let them do their thing naturally, the fan is just fast drying and agitateing the weed making it potentially a harsh smoke.

you dont need a fan IMO. i put mine in my cupboard and they dry in 3-4 days. perfectly to how i want them.
but then again it depends on your enviroment. i dont think you need a fan in your enviroment if they are drying that fast with the fan.
fuck the fan off man

all of the above are right, you are speed drying your weed. better to have it in a cupboard with no fan, just ocasionally open the door and let some fresh air in. if you have a big harvest you need a little bit of air flow to prevent mould, fan blowing directly on the buds is always gonna be nasty though.

I will give this another go tonight, with the remaining buds. If the same problem arises that the buds are becoming overally crispy without a fan.. Would that mean that the strain is not good, or how would I go about it. Not really sure as this is a first time harvest.. Thanks for all the input by the way guys, the fan has been removed :)

Let me break this down for ya. Your making this harder on yourself than it really is! What you've done, from what I can tell by what you've told us.. is you've dried the buds too quickly.. BUT! You have ALSO, dried the buds too much. In other words, if they're that crispy as you say they are.. what you've done basically is you've over-dried them.. therefore you've sucked out ALL the water content of the bud.. which isn't what you want... as you now know.

What you want to do, is let the buds just air dry until the outer part of the buds are dry and the stem BENDS... not BREAK... one the buds have air dried to those specifications.. you then need to slow the drying process down. "How does one do this you might ask..?" It's simple. Go and get yourself some mason jars.. put the buds inside the mason jars. What your doing now.. is what they call "Curing" the buds.. but in reality.. all curing is.. is slowing down the "drying process" down to a very slow speed. What this does.. is it gives the buds time to convert all the non psychoactive ingredients.. into psychoactive (what we want!) ingredients (what gets you high). Also, during the curing process.. any remaining trace elements of any Chlorophyll that may still be inside the buds (gets rid of any chlorophyll that didn't evaporate during the "air drying" process).

Chlorophyll is the main ingredient that is responsible for giving that classic but yet famous "hay" or "cut grass" smell to the buds. You don't really have to cure your buds.. you could just simply let them air dry.. but being able to control the speed of the drying process of the buds.. is what you want. This way you have control of the moisture content in the buds. Basically, when your curing (slowing down the drying process).. your leaving the lid of the mason jar (curing jar) closed for a number of hours.. to let the remaining moisture of the buds evaporate. Once you've had the jar lid closed with the buds in the jar for a good 12 hours.. its then time to "burp" the jar. Burping just consists of opening the lid of the jar every 12 hours.. to let the built up moisture content on the buds.. evaporate and dry again. Once the buds are back to a moisture content of like how they were after you had air dried them.. its time to put the lid back on again... and wait another 12 hours before burping the jars again (burp them).. let the buds air dry again down to just like they were after they were air dried.. and do it again. Just keep repeating this process... until your happy with them.

Also, if I may add this bit of information for everyone too.. then I promise I'll shut up. LMAO. ;)
Anyhow, during the curing process... as you have the lids on the jars closed for 12 hours.. the moisture from inside the buds.. will slowly (during that 12 hour period) start to evaporate.. but since its coming from the inside of the middle of the bud (the stem mainly).. as it evaporates from the middle.. the moisture will end up on the outer edges of the bud.. therefore rehydrating the bud basically. This is also taking out all the nasty Chlorophyll that is trapped in the middle of the stem and bud as well.. so curing is very important if you want a VERY smooth; potent; tasty harvest.

Anyhow, I'm sure some of you will understand what I have just explained. For those of you that don't.. well.. try Google. ;)

peace..

have a good weekend ppl.. FINALLY HOME!

Thanks for that champ, was a great bit of information. Im also wondering with air drying them would you continue to leave them in a dark area? And yeah by what you said, Ive defiently sucked all the water out of them. They're barley a bud anymore just crispy annoyances.

+ REPS TO YOU FOR SURE. I am a 1st grow and about 6 weeks from my 1st harvest and I just saved this so i can refer back to it when my time comes. Appreciate this information. This should be STICKIED!
