Hay smell??

so my last harvest no matter what i did it smelled like hay but I it also wasn't that good of weed....this time I have autos tbey smelled crazy strong and great...but i have a problem were they dry to fast in my environment well thats what I was told and I was told thats why the hay smell that you wana prolong the drying...my questions is, is this true? And I did one plant it was very small but I let it air out for about a day and a half and it started to get crunchy so a buddies siad put it in paper bag to slow the drying and just check on it frequently well it lost all smell and now smells like hay just like mt last crop....what do I do?? Rigjt now I put it into a jar to see if that brings some of the smell back

My second auto i didn't even trim i set it in a cabnet so it qould be dark and i left it as the whole plant with hopes it would slow the drying down but I dont want to fuck that one up as well and be screwd after all this work for the 2nd harvest

If it's drying super fast, you can jar sooner and burp a lot more, and a lot more often until everything is stable between 55-65% RH. I just aim for a stable RH of 60% now. Also you want to shake or stir up the buds when you burps the jars. If it gets on the low end, I'll throw a Boveda pack in until it gets back where I want it.

As far as descriptions of "feel", and visuals of how things (the plant) looks during the drying phase, I actually found (very recently) Bill Ward's videos on "harvest" to be pretty good. I think it's three parts. YT it.

To answer your overall question directly.
Yes, your cannabis is drying to quickly and breakdown of chlorophyll is not being completed.

You are now seeing what the art of curing is like my friend.

How to fix it?
Low and slow cure. Ideally drying 7 - 10 days.
3 days 20c at 65%rh
remainder 18c at 55%rh.

Watch the temperatures! Some of the terpenes boil off in not that high temperatures and that could happen even if you had high enough humidity for them not to dry way too fast. If your weed dries too fast and you have the option to either lower the temperature and slow the drying that way or increase humidity, its better to go with cooler temperatures. High temperatures also create mould in combination with high humidity. And im not saying that humidity is not important, but its important in relation to temperature and its best to have the right temperature and then adjust humidity based on that, and not just ignore temps and increasing humidity to prolong drying.

Ive noticed chopping too early caused that hay smell for me, not matter how perfect my drying conditions were. Once I started waiting for the buds to completely finish growing, I never had that hay smell ever again, even though I dried too fast sometimes. Once you have a nice stock pile of cured herb, the patience thing just comes naturally as you’re not so anxious to reach harvest. In no way am I trying to discredit the importance of drying based on a perfectly timed harvest, obviously drying is one of, if not the most important part of the process, but if the herb was allowed to completely finish before harvesting, the drying just improves what you worked so hard to achieve.
