guys... i just bought 400 W HPS light system
same setup i have now is getting to hot in closet..about 85 degree
can i use my HPS light in one of my rooms.?? without grow tent?
i know light only sufficent for 4X4 area...so if i use 4X4 area in corner of the room ... its ok ? or has to be enclosed area?
 
it will be just fine..put some fans on the grow light..or get a cool tube for the lit and ventilate the tube to the attic through a closet ...i would reccomend if you have your grow in a corner area ..use some mylar to put on the walls..it will help ALOT with maximizing the use of your light for the sides of the plant..remember mylar uses no electricity..and if you wanted to increase the area covered by your 400 watt ...purchase a light mover on ebay for around 110 dollars from sunset hydroponic's..another very cheap way of increasing the area your light will cover by severa;TIMES the amount..for the use of a very small electric motor on the light mover...also you can get your light closer to the tops of the plants ..because the light does not stay constantly directing heat at one plant...or a small area of plants...remember..a light mover will 6 ft long will increase your production area....the cheapest way of increasing production without purchasing MORE lights and using ALOT more power...the light mover should..multiply your one light by 3...it would make that one cover the equivelent area of three lights..
 
i just did this,.....till i get the hydroton from online....this is soil...but this light setup is too low? 3 feet ...once i put my dwc system ...

get a few thermometers and put one near the top of your canopy..top of your plants..dont want it over 90 or so...you can get a 400 closer to your plants than three feet.....have a fan blowing on the light though..
 
my 400 hps is air cooled and I keep it around 10 inches or so from the tops, you are losing a lot of lumens keeping the light 3 feet away...
 
I have the exact same light and i keep mine at 20 inches with a fan blowing diretly onto the light. I also have a oscilating on the plant and a fan on the shelf above to suck hot air up... just a thought. I do keep my ac on alot though
 
really?i seen everywhere says 3 feet rule on 400w so...that is not correct?
2 ft ok then>?
 
My plants have bgot heat stress at 20" but only when the ac goes off and the whole room gets hot so yeah your safe at 2'.
 
no, as I've side my air cooled 400 watt is less then 10 inches away with no signs of heat stress, move the light as close a you can...
 
I use my hand, as soon as I feel warm under the lamp I know it's as far as I can go with my plants.
